The Sioux City Police Department is excited to team up with Opportunities Unlimited and Diary Queen for another year of “You’ve Been Ticketed” program. This is truly something our officers enjoy doing, as it gives them a chance to connect with kids in a positive way and helps them get to know the families and neighborhoods in the areas they patrol.

The Sioux City Police Department is excited to once again partner with Opportunities Unlimited and local Dairy Queen locations for the 11th year of the “You’ve Been Ticketed” program.

This summer safety initiative encourages kids to wear helmets while riding bikes, scooters, skateboards, and more. When officers or Volunteer Trailblazers see kids wearing helmets, they’ll receive a ticket redeemable for a free Dairy Queen ice cream cone. The program promotes safe riding habits, positive connections between officers and youth, and brain injury awareness throughout Siouxland.

The Sioux City Police Department is also looking for additional volunteers to help patrol the bike trails and support the program. Mountain bikes are available for volunteers, along with a provided helmet. To learn more or sign up, call 712-279-6424.

✊🏿❤️💛💚 Today, we recognize Juneteenth.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day news of freedom finally reached enslaved people in Texas—more than two years after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a day to reflect on our nation's history, celebrate freedom, and honor the resilience, achievements, and contributions of African Americans throughout our communities and across the country.

The Sioux City Police Department is committed to serving all members of our community with fairness, respect, and professionalism.

Today, we encourage everyone to take a moment to learn, reflect, and celebrate the significance of Juneteenth.

🎉🖤❤️💚

In honor of Father's Day weekend, we're giving all the dads out there permission to let those corny jokes ride — in the name of traffic safety, of course. 👔

Last week, participants had the opportunity to learn about defensive tactics. Under careful instruction and supervision, they practiced basic handcuffing techniques and defensive movements on one another. The exercise provided a real-world understanding of how challenging it can be when a subject is unwilling to cooperate during an arrest scenario.

Participants also received an introduction to our S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons and Tactics) Unit. They were able to view specialized tools used during high-risk operations, learn how those tools assist with safe building entry, and tour vehicles used by the team.

The session also covered the legalities of arrest, case law, the use of force continuum, departmental policy, and defensive tactics. Attendees had the opportunity to apply pressure point control and handcuffing techniques in a controlled, hands-on environment.

We are incredibly grateful to all of our academy participants—past and present—who take the time to learn more about local law enforcement and the work it entails. Your engagement and support continue to strengthen the partnership we share with our community. 👮👮‍♀️🚓

About 33,000 traffic crashes happened along the shoulder of a road in 2024 — and nearly 600 were deadly.

Let's keep each other safe: Move over for vehicles on the side of the road. ✅
