Earlier today, the board of supervisors also honored the service of our county engineer for over 15 years. County Engineer Mark Nahra will be retiring in February, but due to his forethought and consideration to ensure his successor was in place before he left, County Engineer Laura Sievers is already hired and set up for success as she takes on the role.

As far as things go on the "keeping people happy" spectrum, the county engineer's job is one of the more difficult ones. But Mark's thorough research and collaboration on problems and complaints meant the board could focus on policy decisions while remaining informed of the details through his consistent reports.

My last official act of 2024 as Chairman will be to dedicate the Dennis Butler Meeting Room along with my fellow board members and elected officials.

Dennis was the county's longest serving employee (Finance Director) and passed away earlier this year. The reception will immediately follow the (early) Tuesday board meeting tomorrow December 31, with the dedication set for 10:30am.

WOODBURY COUNTY HIRES DIRECTOR OF EMERGENCY SERVICES

May 14, 2024 – Woodbury County has hired Drew Baier, of Sergeant Bluff, as Emergency Services Director, effective May 20.

“Drew brings vast experience to the position,” said Matthew Ung, Chairman of the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors. “What we heard from our rural communities is that having a paramedic in the position was extremely important, as well as fire experience.”

Baier’s work history includes paramedic for Woodbury County, fleet manager for Siouxland Paramedics, and Captain for Sioux Falls Fire Rescue. He has volunteered for 16 years with local Fire & Emergency Medical Services, and has directed emergency responses across urban and rural environments.

Said Baier: “With rural EMS volunteerism suffering statewide, this position will be an interesting challenge. My goal is for the department to provide county residents with the advanced patient care it needs and deserves, while drawing upon staff experience, knowledge, and efforts. I look forward to getting the county department up to the next level.”

Woodbury County had almost 20 applicants for the position. Due to the extensive interest, Supervisors Mark Nelson and Matthew Ung interviewed several candidates before recommending the full board consider finalists during another round of interviews.
