We keep arguing about whether Social Security is sustainable without asking the harder question:

If it isn't, how do we get out without screwing over people who spent their entire lives paying into it?

I think there's a path.

Protect current retirees. Protect people approaching retirement. Give middle-aged workers options based on what they've already paid in. And give younger Americans a way to build retirement assets they actually own, control, and can pass on to their families.

There won't be a painless solution. We've made promises and accumulated obligations that have to be dealt with.

But we still have a choice:

We can choose reform now—or eventually the math will choose it for us.

What's your solution? Keep Social Security as-is, reform it, privatize part of it, or replace it entirely?
