Good morning:

VCFD and CAL FIRE advise that their tentative plan is to staff the Sandy Fire with reduced crews through Saturday, 5/30/26, for patrol, mop up and suppression repair.

The Incident Command Post at the Camarillo Airport will be broken down today.

This will be the final daily update unless significant changes warrant another update.

Statistics for 5/24/26:
Burned acreage: 2,183
Containment: 71%
Fire personnel on scene: 431

Simi Valley Zones under Evacuation Order, Evacuation Warning or Shelter in Place: None

Access to the fire roads at the south end of Sequioa Ave is closed by "Road closed" signage.

Fire crews will fly drones to search for hot spots. If these drone flights show no heat and mop-up work proceeds quickly, Fire crews and equipment could be released earlier than 5/30/26.

Good morning,
Firefighters have made great progress against the Sandy Fire. The Incident Commander/VCFD Division Chief Cleary credits this to all of the resources that have been deployed. Weaker winds today will enable the Fire Dept's air attack to be more effective. The Fire Department's current priorities are battling the flames, protecting unburned areas, and mopping up burned areas to confirm that no hot spots remain. Simi Valley Unified School District schools are closed through the 5/25/26Memorial Day holiday. The Evacuation Shelter remains open at Rancho Simi Recreational Community Center.

Current statistics:
Burned acres: 2,114.5
Containment: 30%
Fire personnel on scene: 1,120

No change to evac orders

Road closures Continue
There are hard road closures at these two intersections in Simi Valley:
1. Fitzgerald Road & Sequoia Ave
2. Talbert Ave & Fir Ave

Details:
1 Firefighters are making progress. The main concerns are the onshore winds (starting about 11 AM):
a Driving flames into unburned gulleys and drainage ditches
b Blowing embers past the fire lines and starting spot fires
2 Due to the steep and rough terrain, the aerial attack has been the most effective tactic in extinguishing the flames. The Fire Department deploys drones at night to search for hot spots.
3 The fire lines/boundaries are holding. The hand crews and bulldozers build these fire lines and have successfully cut off the "fingers" of fire from reaching unburned areas.
