Did You Know? Silver Falls operates more schools per student than similar-sized districts.

One of the key insights discussed by the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee is how the number of schools in a district affects the services available to students.

Silver Falls School District serves about 3,630 students across 13 school sites. This is more than most Oregon districts with a similar number of students.

Because Silver Falls operates more buildings for a similar number of students, the district must duplicate many services across more campuses, including:

Principals and administrative staff
Counselors and student support services
Special education services and support staff
Music, PE, and other specialists
Custodial and maintenance services

When students are spread across many small schools, resources must be divided among more locations. This can lead to fewer services available at each school and sometimes requires combined or blended grade levels to maintain programs.

Understanding how the number of schools impacts both costs and student services was an important part of the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee’s work as they developed their proposal that the school board will consider.

Did you know? A facilities dashboard helped guide long-range planning in Silver Falls.

As the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee conducted its work, members were provided with a clear, easy-to-use dashboard that brought key information about each school together in one place. The dashboard helped committee members better understand both opportunities and challenges across the district as they developed recommendations for a long-range facilities plan.

The dashboard included information such as:

• Grade configuration – which grade levels each school served
• Building age – when each facility was originally constructed and when major renovations or additions occurred
• Enrollment – current student enrollment at each school
• Building utilization – how fully each school was being used compared to its capacity
• Cost to educate per student – an overview of operating costs at each building on a per-student basis
• Facility condition – the overall condition of major building systems such as roofs, HVAC, and plumbing
• Educational adequacy – how well each facility supported current educational programs and learning needs

By reviewing this information together, committee members were able to engage in informed, balanced discussions as they considered the future of Silver Falls schools. The committee’s bond recommendation was informed by the significant positive shifts on the dashboard through their recommendation to replace the middle school, build a new K-8 to replace three aging facilities, and conduct needed upgrades at remaining schools.

Today’s facility assessment video highlights Central Howell K-8 School, one of the schools included in the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee’s recommendation recently presented to the School Board. Central Howell K-8 currently serves approximately 160 students.

Throughout its work, the committee repeatedly emphasized the value of the district’s rural K–8 schools and the important role they play in their communities. At the same time, committee members recognized the financial challenges of maintaining multiple aging facilities while continuing to provide students with the educational opportunities they deserve.

As a result, the committee recommended consideration of a new west-side K–8 school that would bring together students from Central Howell, Pratum, and Evergreen in a modern facility designed to support future generations of learners. The committee believes this approach would help preserve the rural K–8 educational model on the west side of the district while creating opportunities for expanded academic programs and student support. Consolidation would also create operational efficiencies that could allow more district resources to be directed toward students and classrooms rather than facility maintenance.

It is important to note that this recommendation is advisory in nature. The committee has shared its findings with the superintendent and School Board for consideration, and no decisions have been made regarding future facility investments or a potential bond measure.

At its recent presentation to the School Board, the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee shared its recommendation for addressing the district's highest-priority facility needs. The recommendation follows months of reviewing facility assessments, enrollment trends, and the district's long-term financial outlook.

As part of helping the community better understand the conditions that informed the committee's recommendation, the district is releasing a series of facility assessment videos. Today's video highlights Silverton Middle School, one of the key projects included in the committee's recommendation.

It is important to note that this recommendation is advisory in nature. The committee has provided its findings to the superintendent and School Board for consideration. No decisions have been made, and district leaders will continue reviewing the recommendation before determining next steps.

The committee's recommendation includes:
- Replacing Silverton Middle School
- Constructing a new west-side K–8 school that would consolidate Evergreen, Pratum, and Central Howell schools into one
- Addressing select high-priority deferred maintenance needs across the district

As part of our facility video series, we're highlighting Silverton High School, the district's newest school facility, made possible through community-supported bond measures in 1994 and 2006.

While the high school is among the district's newer buildings, the facility assessment and committee tours identified maintenance, modernization, and long-term facility needs that will need to be addressed in the years ahead. This video provides a closer look at the building, its strengths, and the opportunities the committee discussed as part of its planning process.

Two big honors for one outstanding educator! 🦊 SHS teacher Scott Towery received a Fox Shout Out this school year and was recently recognized alongside Donna Bahr with the Silverton Alumni Association's Honorary Diploma at graduation.

His FFA students have placed at Nationals multiple times and are recognized as one of the top programs in the state, a testament to his passion and leadership.

What did the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee learn during its review of district schools and facilities?

Over the past several months, committee members reviewed professional facility assessments, toured schools across the district, and evaluated the condition of our schools. Their work resulted in a Long Range Facilities Plan that has now been approved by the committee and will be presented to the School Board later this month along with a recommendation for future consideration.

To help our community better understand the findings and current conditions of our schools, the district has created a series of videos highlighting each school and the facility challenges identified during the process.
