UPDATE: The individual responsible for the incident on July 18 is employed by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue. He is off the floor while MCFRS and the Park Police complete fact finding investigations. MCFRS staffs the engine and truck at St. 16 on a regular basis. Our organization owns the building.

Silver Spring Volunteer Fire Department (SSFD) is aware of an incident involving a water discharge near Station 16 and a nearby community baseball field on Thursday evening, July 17. 2025, which unfortunately led to the cancellation of a scheduled game.

We want to express our sincere apologies to the players, teams, Cal Ripken League, and all fans and families impacted by this disruption. We understand how important this venue is to the community and especially to the young athletes who look forward to these events.

Our top priority remains public safety, and we are committed to maintaining open and transparent communication as we work through the facts. We deeply value our relationship with the community and are taking steps to ensure this matter is thoroughly reviewed and that future disruptions are prevented.
Again, we extend our heartfelt apologies and appreciate your patience and understanding as we move forward together.

Justin Parker is now promoted from firefighter to Lieutenant. Justin spent the entirety of his career so far in the 1st Battalion with an initial assignment at Fire Station 12 followed by a transfer to Fire Station 16. Unfortunately his days of driving the tractor drawn aerial are now in his past, but we are certain he will excel in his new position. Congratulations! /rjf

Being a firefighter, EMS provider, police officer is inherently dangerous. There is always potential risk on every call. This is why it is extremely heartbreaking when we lose a first responder.

Master Firefighter Higgins passed away in the line of duty on Saturday January 11th while operating at a house fire in Prince Georges County. Master Firefighter Higgins was a 23 year veteran of the fire service and was assigned to Fire Station 15 in Burtonsville at the time of his passing. Master Firefighter Higgins leaves behind his Wife and two daughters. MFF Higgins had an unmatched love and dedication to the job that will be sorely missed by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting and working with him.
