Have you ever thought about doing EMS? The satisfaction of helping neighbors at possibly one of the worst days of their lives?, Doing community events and seeing the “backside” of operations that most never get to experience? It truly is a self gratifying experience, when others need you the most! The recruitNY program that helps recruit firefighters is a great statewide program but it doesn’t typically help our emergency squad, fortunately our emergency squad is comprised of mostly Silver Creek Fire Department volunteers. So, tomorrow while the recruitNY campaign is going on, EMT’s and Driver’s from the emergency squad will be at the firehall with applications and can answer some of your questions, if you have any. We need your help to make sure we can make as many calls when “our neighbors” need us most! Stop by 10am-2pm tomorrow at the firehall!

Coming to a Town near you….Finally, after being on order since 2023 we have drawings and the new Ambulance 172 is slated to arrive in the 3rd quarter in 2025. The new ambulance is a Ford 4x4 Lifeline Type I ambulance. This is the first 4x4 ambulance we have owned, but with longer transports to hospitals we thought it’d be a wise choice to have one with four wheel drive capabilities..We’re excited to have this new piece of apparatus arrive in the future after such a long wait due to factory delays!

Ever wondered if calling an ambulance could speed up your trip to the emergency room? It might seem logical, but here’s the truth: an ambulance won’t necessarily get you treated any faster.
Ambulances are designed to provide immediate care on the way to the hospital. Their main goal is to stabilize patients during transport, not to beat the clock on emergency room wait times. In fact, the extra time required for dispatch, proper loading, and navigating safely through traffic means that arriving by ambulance is about receiving essential pre-hospital care—not jumping ahead in the queue.
So, if you're considering whether to call an ambulance, remember: while it won’t get you treated quicker, it ensures that you receive critical, life-saving care en route. Trust the professionals and the system designed to keep you safe, even if the journey takes a bit longer. Stay informed and take care!

When to Call an Ambulance: Understanding Appropriate Situations
An ambulance should be reserved for true emergencies where immediate medical attention is critical. Here are some situations where it's appropriate to call for an ambulance:

1. Severe Chest Pain/Heart Attack Symptoms: Includes pain in the chest, jaw, shoulder, or arm, alongside other symptoms like shortness of breath.
2. Stroke Symptoms: Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, or sudden vision problems.
3. Severe Breathing Problems: Struggling to breathe, gasping for air, or turning blue.
4. Uncontrolled Bleeding: Situations where the bleeding does not stop after applying pressure.
5. Major Trauma: This could include severe injuries from car accidents, falls from a great height, or serious head injuries.
6. Unconsciousness: If the person is not responsive.
7. Severe Allergic Reactions: Especially if there is swelling that affects breathing or if there is a history of severe allergies.

Remember, if in doubt, it's better to be safe and call for help. Emergency services can provide guidance on whether an ambulance is necessary.

The Silver Creek Vol Emergency Squad is not operated or run by the Silver Creek Vol. Fire Dept. We understand this may be confusing for some, but approximately five years ago, Fire departments could not bill for ambulance services( they can now) but at the time that we wanted to start billing, it was not allowed by NYS. At that time, we separated from the fire dept. to allow for billing. Again prior to this, NYS did not allow you to belong to two Fire depts, thus meaning to be a member of the Emergency Squad, you had to join the Silver Creek Fire Dept. Respectfully, if you belonged to different dept. you could not be a member of the squad. Not our rules...NYS rules.

Although we attempt to make every call, it is not possible, and we are terribly sorry for that! This bothers us and we are working on a solution. We average 550 calls a year, and these fire dept members responding are not committed to 1-4 hours on that call. If we respond to our neighboring communities, their fire personnel arrive, help out where needed and are back home in 15-20 minutes.

This is personal and saddens us very much that we have to be on the defense here, when we should not have to be! I know our situation is much different than other departments, but please if you have questions, we are more than happy and willing to answer any of them. We need to work together....not against one another!

An ambulance ride will not get you seen any faster. Please use 911 accordingly. It's for true emergencies only.

02/26/2025

Applications are always being accepted for those who like to sit home and complain. JS. Most people have no idea the time, sacrifices, and dedication it takes to be an active member! They just expect someone to show up if they call 911. The truth is, sadly, times are changing, and we need help from everyone in the community! The Silver Creek Emergency Squad is totally separate from the fire dept. Therefore, merging or consolidation has nothing to do with EMS calls( for those who don't know this and just assume they know)

Top Responder for the month of May was
Jeff Griewisch.

Thank you to all our members who give up so much of their time to help others. People often don't know, on average, a typical EMS call requires a minimum of an hour of our members time. This includes drivers and EMT's. Often times it has become 2-3 hours of our members time if you are on the ambulance. If you have that type of dedication or time, please contact a member, we would love to talk to you about joining. Until then, thank you to all of our members who continually try their best to serve their community. You guys and girls are the best!!!
