June 13–14, 2026

Enjoy two full days of outdoor adventure across Michigan — no fishing license, no ORV permit, and no Recreation Passport required!

What's Included

🎣 Free Fishing Weekend
Fish for all in-season species in Michigan waters without a fishing license. All fishing regulations and size/possession limits remain in effect.

🏍️ Free ORV Weekend
Ride more than 4,000 miles of state-designated ORV routes and trails, plus six scramble areas, without purchasing an ORV license or trail permit.

🌲 Free State Park Entry
Visit all 103 Michigan state parks and more than 1,000 state-managed boating access sites with no Recreation Passport required.

🚧 Trail Construction Notice – Presque Isle Unit 🚧

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

Visitors are advised that a construction project is currently underway on the North Country National Scenic Trail within the Presque Isle area.

What's Happening?

The stair structure leading to the top of Manido Falls is being removed and replaced to improve visitor safety and access.

Temporary Closures

⚠️ The Backpacker Parking Lot is closed.

⚠️ Portions of the West River Trail are closed in the construction area.

Alternate Routes

🥾 Hikers are encouraged to:

Use the Campground Road as a detour route, or
Access the area via the East River Trail

Please follow all posted closure signs and stay out of active construction zones for your safety and the safety of construction crews.

Project Timeline

📅 Construction is expected to be completed by late August 2026.

Thank you for your patience as we work to improve the trail experience for future visitors.

Recent cancellations means one of the most unique lodging experiences in the Porcupine Mountains is now available for 3 of the best weeks of the summer: June 26-July 3, July 3-July 10 & July 10-July 17 — but not for long.

Nestled along the shores of Lake Superior near the campground entrance, Kaug Wudjoo Lodge ("Place of the Crouching Porcupine" in Ojibwa) was built shortly after the park was established in 1945 and originally served as the park manager's residence. Surrounded by towering hemlock trees and overlooking the lake, this historic lodge captures the spirit and beauty of the Porkies.

New Friends in the Porcupine Mountains 🦝🌲

One of the best parts of life in the Porcupine Mountains is that you never know who might stop by to say hello! These curious raccoon visitors recently dropped in for a visit and reminded us that wildlife can appear when you least expect it.

As summer approaches, we're looking forward to a busy season filled with new faces, great adventures, and plenty of memorable encounters. Whether it's along a trail, at a campsite, or right outside your door, there's always something wild to discover in the Porkies.

Here's to a fun-filled summer, new friends, and the surprises that make every day in the Porkies special!

🚧 Fresh upgrades are causing a closure at the Big Iron Boat Launch in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park this week.
New gravel is going down as construction continues to improve access for boaters and visitors.

The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Visitor Center is officially open for the 2026 season!

We’re now welcoming visitors daily from 8 AM – 8 PM EST. Stop in for trail information, maps, exhibits, and trip planning before heading out to explore the Porkies.

Even better — our renovations are complete, and we’re excited for everyone to see the updated space. We look forward to another great season in the Porcupine Mountains! 🌲🏞️
