The Commons is launching our End of Year Matching Gift Challenge! Thanks to two generous partners, Suzi & Janey and the Town of Silver City, there’s a $50,000 matching challenge for gifts made to The Commons by December 31st! Since 2009, The Commons, then The Volunteer Center, has been tackling food insecurity in our local community and has since then grown into a hub for food justice and sustainability.
Right now, food pantries are feeling the strain as more households turn to community support to fill the gaps. New Mexico now faces some of the highest food insecurity rates in the nation, with over 1 in 6 people (16.6%) struggling to access enough nutritious food. For children, that number climbs even higher with nearly 1 in 4 (23.3%) in risk of hunger (Roadrunner Food Bank, Map the Meal Gap).
