Friends who will be at Silver City's 4th of July parade:
This year's parade theme is "Rally 'Round the Flag." By all means, display the red, white, and blue. But we also invite you to print this "Gila flag" image and hold it up as a sign, post it on your float, or tape it to the back of your shirt. Let's see how many folks we can get to fly this Gila flag on the 4th! Pass it on!

Thanks to Nuestro Rio, The Wellness Coalition, and the Hispanic Access Foundation for organizing today's "Colorado River Day" activities at Gough Park. The Colorado River has been named America's most endangered river -- and the free-flowing Gila is one of the Colorado's threatened tributaries. Many people spoke at today's event to highlight the role of Latinos in protecting the water that gives life to southwestern New Mexico.

GCEC worked with Silver City Mainstreet, Monsoon Puppet, Watershed Keepers, poets Bonnie Buckley Maldonado & Elise Stuart, and a host of other volunteers to produce this year's Big Ditch Day activities. Thanks for helping our community remember the natural and cultural heritage of the Ditch!

Thanks to Denise Smith of the Silver City Office of Sustainability and NMSEA for taking out the SunChasers "Solar Trunk" today, for Mrs. Door and the K-3 students from Harrison Schmitt Elementary! We had a great time learning about the photovoltaic-panel-powered fountain and the passive solar house. We raced tabletop solar-powered cars, and Coach Martin helped us bake cookies in the solar oven!

Mark your calendar -- help us celebrate Big Ditch Day on July 19! There will be lots of fun, FREE activities from 9am-1pm, from College Avenue to Broadway all along the Big Ditch park, downtown Silver City's hidden green gem.

The 4th of July Ice Cream Social was a great opportunity to talk to folks about campfire safety, outdoor recreation, AND renewable energy. Smokey Bear, who was visiting the Museum to celebrate his 70th birthday, stopped by lend us his support. Thanks to Jean Eisenhower for providing the solar oven!

GCEC staff and volunteers have been busy. All the way back on Saturday June 14, we were at the Bayard Public Library. We talked about soil, compost, native plants, and the traditional Mimbres Three Sisters crops (corn, beans, squash). Everyone got to decorate, plant seeds in, and take home a small ceramic planter. We also planted seeds in peat pots. Samiyah Edwards, a senior at ALHS, helped Adrienne Booth with the presentation. Thanks, Samiyah!
