Things to Think About on Election Day
First and foremost, today we need to pray — for our community, for our state, and for this election. Today matters. It may not be the General Election, but it is just as important. Every election shapes the direction of our county, and every vote is a voice. It’s your right, and it’s your responsibility.
I hear people say all the time, “Why don’t Republicans protest?” or “We should counter‑protest those groups with their crazy costumes and signs.” Honestly, I’ve never believed protests accomplish much. All they do is raise my blood pressure when I drive by.
Real change doesn’t happen on a street corner — it happens when we get involved. It happens when we step up to run for office. It happens when we vote against the things being pushed into our community. It happens when we stop sitting back and complaining and start participating.
How many of us are truly happy with what’s been happening to Grant County? It’s getting harder and harder to recognize the place we grew up in. That’s why today is so important.
Today is Voting Day. A day to say enough is enough. A day to let our voices be heard through our ballots.
I hear people say elections are rigged. I can’t claim 100% certainty one way or the other — but I do know this: the best way to protect the process is to make sure every legal vote gets cast. The more of us who show up, the harder it is for anything to be ignored.
And there’s more to today than just voting. We need candidates — Republicans willing to step up and run. I hear the same line over and over: “You can’t win as a Republican in Grant County.” That is simply not true. Republicans have won here. Republicans can win here. We just need more people willing to try.
We also need volunteers. Poll Watchers. Poll Challengers. People willing to give a few hours to help protect the integrity of the process.
And we need more people to join the Republican Party of Grant County — a volunteer group with many roles, all of them important. If we want change, we need hands, hearts, and voices working together.
Today is the day. Get out and vote. Encourage others to vote. Stand up for the community we love — not with signs, not with shouting, but with action.

Anthony Gonzalez is held without bond
May 13, 2026 — Sixth Judicial District Attorney Norman R. Wheeler announced that 31-year-old Anthony J. Gonzalez is being held without bond in Grant County after being charged with 4 Counts of Criminal Sexual Pe*******on (1st Degree Felony), 3 counts of Criminal Sexual Contact of a Minor (2nd Degree Felony), 2 counts Child Abuse (3rd Degree Felony), 1 count Intimidation of a Witness (3rd Degree Felony) and 1 count of Aggravated Stalking (4th Degree Felony). The Silver City police investigation began after a call was made to Grant County Central Dispatch regarding a Domestic disturbance complaint.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Joseph Silva represented the State during the hearing. The presiding judge was the Honorable Judge Foy of the Sixth Judicial District Court. Judge Foy granted the State’s Motion for Pretrial Detention, determining that Gonzalez poses a danger to both the victims and the community. Sufficient evidence was found to bind Gonzalez over for trial on all counts, and he will remain in custody until further order from the court or until the case is concluded.
District Attorney Wheeler emphasized the importance of holding offenders accountable and praised the courage of the victim in coming forward, as well as the work of law enforcement and prosecution in securing justice.

Most amendments pass in New Mexico. It is important for the voters to educate themselves on exactly what they are voting yes to. This is the perfect example.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 6, 2026 – The justice system is responsible for holding individuals accountable for criminal conduct while also working to protect and support victims of crime. An important part of this process is determining whether a defendant poses a danger to the community under applicable law.
In 2016, voters approved a constitutional amendment establishing what is commonly referred to as a No Bond Detention or Pre Trial Detention Hearing. prior to this amendment at arraignment a magistrate judge was entitled to set a bond on a defendant based upon the nature of the charges and the record of the defendant.
AFTER THE PASSAGE OF THIS AMENDMENT, all defendants are required to be released without posting a bond regardless of the charge unless a motion under NMRA 5-409 is filed by the district attorney’s office. After the passage of this amendment, a defendant may be held without bond only after a formal court hearing based upon the filing of the 5-409 motion. At that hearing, the prosecution must present clear and convincing evidence that the defendant poses a danger to the community and that no conditions of release can be set that would protect the community. so, in only those cases in which a 5-409 motion is filed might a defendant be held without bond.
The graph represents the number of detention hearings for the year 2025.
