❤️ I’m taking an “unofficial poll” on NMAA’s proposed rule changes 😡! Today, the NMAA released a video explaining several proposed eligibility changes that could have a significant impact on high school athletics across New Mexico. One of the most discussed proposals would allow a student to make a one-time free transfer and be immediately eligible to participate in varsity athletics at their new school. As you can imagine, this proposal has generated a lot of discussion across the state! There are strong opinions, valid concerns, and different perspectives about what these changes could mean for students, schools, and communities across the state.

As a member of the NMAA Board of Directors, today I voted to move these proposed changes on to the full NMAA membership for consideration since major policy changes like these have to be reviewed by member schools and districts before they take affect. My vote is not a signal of support or opposition to the proposals themselves, but instead I wanted to allow school districts across New Mexico to review the recommendations, discuss their potential impact, and cast their votes through their superintendents and athletic directors. Those votes will be tallied around June 20th.

Now, I understand why many families support the idea of a one time free transfer and the opportunities it may provide students. At the same time, I believe we must carefully consider the impact these changes could have on rural schools, neighboring districts, and communities where participation numbers are critical to sustaining programs.

Honestly, I want to make sure we have a system that is fair to students while also protecting the integrity of athletics and activities across New Mexico. The challenge is finding the right balance between student choice and maintaining a level playing field for schools of all sizes. I encourage everyone to watch the NMAA video to learn more about the proposed changes and the process moving forward.

Do you support the proposed NMAA rule allowing a student athlete “one free transfer” during high school with immediate varsity eligibility at their new school?
Click: ❤️ Yes, I support it!
Click: 😡 No, I don’t agree with it!

✈️🛩️ Silver Schools students are taking learning to new heights this week at the AKC Aviation Camp in Las Cruces! The AKC is led by former New Mexico Senator and educator Dr. Bill Soules and serves high school and college-age students from southern New Mexico through immersive aviation and aerospace experiences. Students work with aviation professionals and gain exposure to aircraft technology, engineering concepts, aviation maintenance, and aerospace careers. After spending yesterday exploring aviation careers, aircraft systems, tools, controls, and flight simulators, students had the opportunity today to take the next step and experience flight firsthand. Through hands-on activities and guidance from aviation professionals, students are gaining a deeper understanding of the many pathways available in the aviation and aerospace industries. A special thank you to the Soules Aero-Knowledge Center (AKC) and its partners for providing this incredible opportunity for students from across New Mexico. ✈️🔧🧑‍✈️🚁🌞

💙🤍 🏗️ Harrison Schmitt Elementary School Summer Improvements are underway. Today, Harrison Schmitt Elementary School began the first phase of a major flooring improvement project focused on the original 1970 construction portion of the campus. As part of this work, certified contractors have started preparing approximately 29,000 square feet of classrooms, hallways, and common areas for the safe removal of asbestos-containing floor tile and mastic that has remained in place since the school’s original construction.

Pictured is the early stages of the process, with classrooms and learning spaces being carefully sealed using containment barriers before abatement begins. The work is completed under strict federal, state, and local regulations and includes negative air pressure systems, wet removal methods, independent air monitoring, and final clearance testing before spaces are returned for use.

This summer’s work represents a significant investment in the long term safety and modernization of Harrison Schmitt Elementary. The floor asbestos abatement contract approximately $126,914.80, and the new flooring installation contract is approximately $189,522.11, both funded by Silver Consolidated Schools. Earlier this year, the district also completed asbestos ceiling tile abatement at a cost of $118,471.20, with 63% funded by Silver Schools and 37% funded by the Public School Facilities Authority (PSFA).

Combined, Silver Schools and our Silver City community has invested more than $435,000 in asbestos abatement and replacement flooring improvements at Harrison Elementary. These projects are another example of your tax dollars at work as we continue addressing aging infrastructure and creating safe, healthy learning environments for our students and staff. We appreciate the patience of our community and the hard work of the contractors, maintenance staff, and PSFA project partners who are helping prepare Harrison for the future. Still to come Harrison, roofing and playground updates! 🏫🔨👷‍♂️ 💙🤍
