Altrusans take a moment to pause and remember what happened in America 25 years ago to day. Patriot Day this year marks 25 years since the 2001 attacks, honoring nearly 3,000 victims and the first responders who acted with heroism. The day serves as a solemn reminder of the thousands of people who died during the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard United Flight 93. We will never forget! We are so excited to see ASTRA kick off at Sikeston High School. Lots of young people are interested in serving their community and we are thrilled to be able to encourage and support their efforts. We had more than 18 youth show up for the organizational meeting this week. Lots of potential projects were discussed witth input from the young people. Stay tuned for more updates! Today is International Literacy Day, actually it marks their 60th anniversary. We are celebrating the transformative power of education, reading, writing and lifelong learning. According to the United Nations, 739 million adults and young people worldwide still lack basic literacy skills creating barriers that can last a lifetime. The theme this year is "Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity." Altrusa is proud to support literacy efforts at the community level throughout the world. Even though Altrusans have been involved in supporting Sikestons Little Theatre, they learned a lot more at our last club meeting. Standing is Laura Beth Whittington and Hilary Borton from Siketon Little Theatre. They shared that this is their 67th season. Altrusans have committed to help serve refreshments at the plays this year. We are looking forward to supporting Sikeston Little Theatre through this service opportunity. August is almost over and Altrusa is already gearing up to celebrate World Literacy Day (September 8). At the last club meeting, President Sondra Meadows and Club Foundation Treasurer, Tina Withrow presented a check to Ron Eifert, director of the Sikeston Public Library of $100 in honor of World Literacy Day. The club requested that these funds be used to purchase audio books for the sight impaired and Spanish books for bilingual readers. Altrusa International District Eight Altrusa
