The Calm Behind the Chaos: Honoring Our Dispatchers

Before the sirens. Before the lights. Before help arrives—there is a voice.

During Telecommunications Week, Keokuk County recognizes our dispatchers: the first, first responders. They are the calm in chaos, guiding callers through fear and uncertainty while coordinating the response that follows.

In seconds, they gather critical information, make rapid decisions, and provide steady reassurance to those facing some of the worst moments of their lives. Their voice becomes a lifeline—not just for the public, but for every deputy, firefighter, and medic responding to the call.

Their work is often unseen, but never unimportant.

Dispatchers carry the weight of every call—the urgency, the emotion, the responsibility. It takes strength, focus, and compassion to do what they do, day in and day out.

To our Keokuk County dispatchers: thank you. Your voice matters. Your work saves lives.

And to our community—when you call 911, know that you are never alone.

04/04/2011, a day this community will never forget. Fifteen years ago on this day we lost a brother, son, father, leader and a dedicated
public servant. Sergeant Eric Stein gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving with unwavering dedication, courage and integrity. He was more than a deputy, firefighter or paramedic. This man was a mentor to many, an amazing partner to all his colleagues, and protector who always held the line for his community without haste.
Sergeant Stein found himself in the public service field knowing what risks he would face.
Those risks never kept him from putting his life before others. He was a selfless man who wore all his badges proudly.
Although these last fifteen years have passed by, his sacrifice and dedication have not. His legacy will live on within the men and women that continue serving in
this community and in his honor. Today, we remember not only how this man lost his life, but how he lived. He lived with strength, humility and a commitment to what was right.
Today may we all take a moment of silence for Sergeant Eric Stein. We shall reflect on his service and the lasting impact he made on his fellow colleagues, family, friends and community members.
To Sergeant Steins family, we extend our respect and gratitude. Your loss has not been forgotten.
Sergeant Stein, your watch may have ended those fifteen years ago, but your legacy continues on within all of us. We will never forget. Rest easy Sergeant. We will take the watch from here.
