We are incredibly grateful to the volunteers from Brethren of the Hammer who donated 28 hours of service to remove our old carpeting and install beautiful new flooring in one of our most-used spaces.

This room serves as both a workspace for our Career Pathways Coach and a tutoring area for our students, and the updated flooring has made a tremendous difference.

A special thank you to Dave Vernetti, Tom Ryan, Che Carico, Jacky Presler, and, his grandson, Chris for sharing their time, talents, and hard work with SMSS.

We would also like to recognize Che Carico, the designated Safety Monitor and cleanup expert. Che routinely shows up ready to help and willingly steps in wherever she is needed. Her positive attitude and dedication make every project run more smoothly!

Thank you all for helping us create a welcoming and functional space for the families and students we serve.

Summer Reading Challenge is Here!

We’re excited to share a wonderful idea developed by Julia, one of our middle and high school tutors!

This summer, students are encouraged to keep a reading log and track the books they read throughout the season. Participants can stop by the SMSS office to share their progress and receive fun prizes, treats, and encouragement along the way.

After six visits, students will earn a $25 gift card as a reward for their dedication to reading!

Did you know that SMSS also has a small library in our office? Children are welcome to stop by throughout the year to browse our collection and take home books to enjoy. We are always collecting the summer Required Reading books if you have them to donate!

We hope this program inspires a love of reading, helps students maintain their literacy skills over the summer, and encourages them to discover new stories and adventures.

Huge Thank You to Jon!

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Jon for his generous donation to SMSS. When he decided to transition from gas-powered lawn equipment to electric equipment, he thought of our community and reached out to see if his tools could help someone in need.

Thanks to his kindness, SMSS received a w**d eater, chainsaw, and hedge trimmers, equipment that will provide a valuable opportunity for a client to maintain their property, tackle home projects, and improve their quality of life.

Donations like these remind us that neighbors helping neighbors truly makes a difference. Thank you, Jon, for your generosity and for investing in our community!

A Special Thank You to Leaba and the Amazing Volunteers at St. Timothy’s!

We would like to give a heartfelt shout-out to Leaba and the dedicated volunteers from St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church for their continued commitment to helping local children through their Summer Sack Pack Program.

This is their 4th year providing sack packs for kids throughout the summer, and their dedication never wavers. Twice each week, these wonderful volunteers fill and restock sack pack tubs to help ensure children have access to nutritious snacks when school is out.

Their support is very meaningful this year, as Hamilton County students are not receiving the Summer EBT benefit that previously provided $120 per student to help families purchase food during the summer months.

Because of caring community partners like Leaba and the volunteers at St. Timothy’s, children have one less thing to worry about, and families receive a little extra support during a challenging time.

Thank you for your compassion, generosity, and commitment to our community. Your efforts are making a real difference in the lives of local children and families every single week.

Homeownership is a blessing, but it also comes with responsibilities. Sometimes the maintenance and repairs that come with owning a home can feel overwhelming, especially for families already working hard to make ends meet.

At Signal Mountain Social Services, we regularly conduct home visits with our clients. While these visits help us better understand their needs and provide support, they also give us an opportunity to identify potential safety concerns that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Earlier this spring, during a home visit with a single mother of three, we nearly fell through her front porch while walking to the door. Concerned for her family’s safety, we reached out to Brethren of the Hammer to see if they would be willing to help. When their team assessed the property, they discovered the side porch and landing were also in serious disrepair, and the back deck needed repairs to safely extend its life.

Thanks to the generosity and hard work of this team, these critical repairs are being addressed, helping ensure this family has a safer place to call home. We are incredibly grateful for community partnerships like this one that make such a meaningful difference in the lives of our neighbors.

As we continue to identify needs like these, we would love to build our Home Repair Team of volunteers willing to tackle small projects for local families, seniors, and individuals in need. SMSS Volunteer of the Year 2025: Tiffany
Some people make a difference with grand gestures. Tiffany makes a difference every single day through countless acts of kindness, generosity, and love.
Since 2015, Tiffany has faithfully served SMSS as a Food Pantry Volunteer, Board Member, and Scholarship Committee member. She works quietly behind the scenes, never seeking recognition, but always stepping up when there is a need.
If Tiffany hears about a need that touches her heart, you can consider it done. Need blankets during a cold snap? Tiffany and Steve make it happen. Need a toilet for the office? Check. A client needs a washing machine? Delivered.
Tiffany has a remarkable gift for seeing needs and responding with compassion. She offers helping hands, listening ears, encouragement, and support without judgment. Her kindness extends to people and animals alike, and her caring spirit makes everyone around her feel valued and loved.
She is always willing to pitch in, do the hard work, and help wherever she is needed. Tiffany embodies inclusion, generosity, and community. She is a devoted friend, a loving family member, and a blessing to so many.
The world is truly a better place because of Tiffany, and we are honored to recognize her as our 2025 Volunteer of the Year.

Clothes House Volunteer of the Year 2025: Andrea
After moving back to Signal Mountain a few years ago, Andrea was encouraged by her cousin Julie, a longtime Clothes House volunteer, to come help out and she’s been a dedicated volunteer ever since!
From hanging donated clothing to pricing jewelry, Andrea loves knowing that community donations help support neighbors in need. A lifelong jewelry collector and passionate thrifter, volunteering at the Clothes House perfectly aligns with her values of sustainability, re-purposing, and giving back. Plus, she says it’s fun and has led to some wonderful new friendships along the way.
Andrea, thank you for the countless hours you have dedicated to serving our community through the Clothes House. Your kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others make a lasting impact on the lives of so many. We are grateful for all you do and are honored to recognize you as our 2025 Clothes House Volunteer of the Year. A huge thank you to Gary and Heather for their generous donation of Gary's late sister's powered wheelchair.
New to Signal Mountain, Gary recently reached out to SMSS after discovering our
organization and shared that he had items from his sister that he hoped could help others.
Among them was a motorized wheelchair, and we were able to quickly match it with a client in need. This donation is truly life-changing for the individual who received it, and we are so grateful for this meaningful act of generosity and care.

SMSS is currently looking for volunteers to help make a meaningful difference in our community!
We are seeking a few helping hands to assist with cleaning gutters for some of our elderly clients, as well as someone willing to help cut back brush for another senior in need. These simple acts of service go a long way in helping our neighbors stay safe and cared for in their homes.

The SMSS Food Pantry is in need of a few essential items to help support local families in our community.

We are currently looking for donations of pasta, Hamburger Helper, oatmeal, taco meal kits, and muffin mix, along with frozen vegetables. If you have extra garden vegetables this summer, fresh produce is also greatly appreciated!

Every donation, big or small, helps us keep our pantry stocked and our neighbors supported. Thank you for continuing to show up for our community in such a meaningful way!
