With Summer around the corner and the start of the World Cup we would like to remind everyone to leave fireworks to the professionals.

Fireworks and sparklers are not safe, especially around children.

Massachusetts law prohibits the possession, use, and sale of fireworks by unlicensed individuals, even if you buy them legally in another state.

Today, we were contacted by animal control, who stated that a Boston Terrier was in respiratory distress and needed immediate medical intervention. The animal control officer took the dog to fire headquarters, where we administered oxygen via an animal-specific mask. Tufts instructed the ACO to bring the dog immediately to the ER. Deputy Chief Weigold transported the dog in his department vehicle, so firefighter Evangelou could administer oxygen during transport. The dog was loose at Dean Park, playing with its sibling in the heat, causing it to overheat. The dog is currently at Tufts ER in serious condition.

Later in the day, engine 3 arrived at Market Basket to find a dog locked in a car, which was also showing signs of difficulty breathing. Lt. Ljunggren called for police to respond, used a lockout kit to open the car door, and placed the dog in the air-conditioned police cruiser. The police spoke to the dog owner when they came back to the car.

It doesn’t take long or high temperatures for a dog to overheat. It's never safe to leave your pets in a car, and always make sure they have plenty of water and shade.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the active fire. With help from our mutual aid partners from Northboro and Westboro we were able to ensure that the fire did not extend beyond the area of ignition.
