🚧 Road construction projects can impact more than just traffic patterns—they can affect emergency response routes and access throughout our communities.

As road construction projects are planned and implemented, the Fire District actively reviews project details to identify potential impacts on emergency response operations. We monitor project layouts and weekly construction updates to understand road closures, detours, and access limitations.

Information about construction projects is shared with fire department personnel so crews can adjust response plans, identify alternate routes, and maintain the fastest possible service to those in need.

If you would like additional information on construction projects within the Excelsior Fire District communities, please visit the Cities Website.

Last Saturday, some of our firefighters (along with a few Chan and St Boni firefighters) proudly participated in the Tunnel to Towers 5K in honor of Stephen Siller, a Brooklyn firefighter who gave his life on September 11 after running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel in full turnout gear to reach the Twin Towers.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation continues his legacy by supporting America’s heroes — providing mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children and building specially adapted smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.

We’re proud to support such a meaningful cause and honor those who have sacrificed so much.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY

MEMORIAL DAY 1946

During World War II Fourteen Excelsior Fire Department Firefighters went into the service. They became members of the Army, Navy, Army Air Corps, and Merchant Marines.

World War II ended on September 2, 1945. Firefighters retuning from WW II made it back home in time for the Memorial Day festivities in Excelsior.

To honor their fellow firefighters that had become soldiers, the fire department placed a banner with blue stars on the EFD Rescue truck. Each star represented an EFD firefighter who was in the military. The display of stars was most likely inspired by the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a Service Flag in one of the windows of their homes. The Service Flag had a star on it for each family member in the military.

Firefighter, Jim Lees was in the Merchant Marines and was on the USS Argonne when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7th, 1941. Fortunately, no one on his ship was wounded. His ship was one of the ships in the harbor that was responsible for saving lives and recovering bodies.

The EFD Rescue Squad was purchased in 1937 and stocked with medical supplies including bone splints, plasma, a stretcher, and an inhalator.
Set aside your Memorial Day morning to honor the soldiers of today and yesterday.

Please help us welcome our newest full-time employee, Troy Walsh! Troy has accepted the roll of Battalion Chief of Emergency Management and Technology.

Troy was born and raised in Victoria and began his involvement in the fire service while still in high school, gaining early hands-on experience while also working full-time for the City of Victoria Public Works Department, where he oversaw safety and the Streets and Storm Water Divisions. After years of balancing work, education, and personal responsibilities, he earned an associate’s degree in Fire Science Technology from Hennepin Technical College in 2013, along with several other certifications and operational credentials related to the fire service.

In 2014, he transitioned into a role as a Loss Control Consultant with the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust, specializing in fire service and public works. Alongside his professional career, he remained active in training and education, instructing for several fire service organizations and helping manage the Carver County Fire Academy. He continued to pursue professional development as a Certified Emergency Manager, licensed firefighter, and qualified instructor.

He married his wife, Stephanie, in 2016, and they welcomed their daughter, Alexandra, in 2019. In 2023, after 25 years of service, he retired from the Victoria Fire Department, moved to East Union, and joined the Carver Fire Department. Motivated by a lifelong goal of serving full-time in the fire service, he made a career change and now serves as a Battalion Chief with the Excelsior Fire District, continuing to demonstrate strong dedication and passion for the profession.

In his free time, Troy enjoys the outdoors—especially at his family cabin in northern Minnesota—as well as camping, concerts, traveling, and sunset cruises through the country in his side-by-side.

Welcome to the EXFD family, Troy!

🔥🔥Structure Fire Update🔥🔥

Early this morning, the Excelsior Fire District and South Lake Minnetonka Police Department were dispatched to Haskell's Port in downtown Excelsior for the report of an alarm. Upon arrival, SLMPD reported heavy fire involvement on several sides of the building. Crews worked to quickly bring the fire under control and prevented the fire from spreading into the liquor store portion of the structure. There were no people on site at the time of the fire and there were no injuries as a result of the fire or operations. A crew will remain on scene to monitor the site. Thank you to the neighboring fire departments and supporting agencies, including SLMPD and Excelsior Public Works for their assistance!
