Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District - MMSD to Begin Sewer Rehabilitation Project Mid-June

The project site is located west of the Oak Leaf Trail, by the corner of Cambridge Road and Providence Avenue. A liner will be installed in a segment of pipe that conveys wastewater from the combined sewer to the nearest overflow point. The work will extend the life of the sewer by 50 years. The project is expected to be completed within 5 – 7 days.

While streets will remain open, please use caution at the intersection of Cambridge Road and Providence Street. Please see map below. The Oak Leaf Trail will also remain open. A flagger will be stationed at the trail when equipment is moved to and from the construction area.

If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with Drew Hrobar, Construction Manager, at [email protected] or Kate Morgan, Sr. Public Engagement Specialist, at [email protected].

Did You See the Latest Utility Bill Insert?

The latest utility bill includes information about upcoming water utility rate changes approved by the Wisconsin Public Service Commission (PSC).

Beginning with August 2026 bills, customers will see adjustments to water volume charges, water meter charges, public fire protection charges, and a new Lead Service Line Financial Assistance Program (FAP) charge. These changes help fund federally mandated lead service line replacements, infrastructure improvements, and ongoing utility operations.

The bill insert provides an overview of the changes with a sample utility bill, while additional information, FAQs, and a detailed breakdown of the new rates are available on the Village website.

Read the full insert and learn more about your water bill here: https://villageofshorewood.org/877/Utility-Billing-Rates-and-Information.

Safety Ring Buoy Reminder

Last year, Shorewood installed a red ring buoy safety station near the beach stairs through the WaterSAFE MKE program with generous support from the Shorewood Foundation.

If you see someone struggling in the water, flip up the front cover, grab the ring buoy, and toss it to the person if they are within reach. Always keep yourself safe while helping others. If a lifeguard is not present, make sure you also have a flotation device for yourself. Then, immediately call 911 and provide the number listed on the ring buoy station so emergency responders can quickly identify the exact location.

A ring buoy station was also installed at Hubbard Park along the Milwaukee River.

Oakland Avenue Water Service Line Installation

As part of the Oakland Avenue Project, the Village of Shorewood is replacing lead water service lines. These lines carry water from the water main beneath the street to individual buildings, typically ending at the water meter. In some cases, private lead piping beyond the meter is also being replaced in coordination with property owners.

Before work begins, the contractor will coordinate with property owners and any businesses in the building to schedule the work and obtain access to interior areas.
Because buildings along Oakland Avenue vary in age, design, and renovation history, each property may have unique plumbing configurations and infrastructure conditions that affect the installation process. Some buildings also have multiple water meters and service connections serving several tenants.

Crews begin by excavating between the street water main and the building connection, using both machinery and hand digging to safely avoid underground utilities, including gas, electric, and communication lines. Once the existing service line is exposed, crews remove the lead piping and install a new water service line and water meter. Crews then replace the agreed upon private water service lines.

After installation, the new service line will be tested to confirm proper operation and compliance with water quality standards. Once testing is complete, water service to the building will be restored. Crews will restore water by the end of each day. All excavated areas will be filled by the end of the day or barricaded.
