In the beginning part of last week, Week 5 of SLP, our friends got into a lot of fun stuff! Monday and Tuesday went by quick with our friends from Cumberland Drug and Alcohol coming to give another lesson, and extended outdoor free time by the intermediate school. Taste Test Tuesday was carrot hummus, which got the best reviews yet this summer! Wednesday and Thursday we had friends from the Child Advocacy Center come in and do yoga and lessons with some of the kids while others got to participate in reading groups, free time, games, and an American Sign Language lesson! The first part of last week went superbly, and we cannot wait to share how our field trip to Furnace Run Nature Park on Friday went!!

Week 4 at SLP was spirit week! From backwards clothing to silly hair staff and kids got creative. We got into our typical taste test Tuesday, but from a different book with green eggs and ham. The children reported this week being the best taste test Tuesday yet! We also completed chalk squares out front of the school for parents to see at pickup. This week's field trip was one for the books! With the longest travel for SLP, we took an hour-long bus trip to Indian Echo Caverns. The students got to see the caverns, play outside, and go rock sifting to take home their own gems. Overall, week 4 was a big one for SLP and this wonderful group of friends knocked it out of the park!

Week 3 of SLP was packed with fun activities and community events! From Cumberland County Drug and Alcohol coming in again on Monday, to the Shippensburg EMS, to our field trip to the Shippensburg Historical Center, this week we are so thankful for our wonderful community for all of the opportunities they are providing for the children! We got into our typical card and yard games, crafts, and taste test Tuesday. EMS came with their vehicles! The kids got to ride a lift, get inside emergency vehicles, learn about equipment, and hear the day to day life of working as a first responder. The students were so engaged and asked so many wonderful questions, it was amazing to see! Our field trip this week also went well with four stations where the students got to participate in a scavenger hunt, play yard games, cook in an outdoor bread oven, and learn some history about Shippensburg! This week was a fun-filled adventure!

Week 2 of Summer Learning Program was a successful and calm week! With a shortened four-day week because of Independence Day, we had no field trip, but the fun was kept alive at James Burd with this excellent group of friends! Cumberland County Drug and Alcohol provides programming every Monday to teach children substance and life safety in age-appropriate groups. Every Tuesday, we have a surprise taste testing that goes along with Garlic and the Vampire, our weekly read aloud! In week 2, our friends took advantage of the beautiful weather. We did chalk art, played fun games, had read alouds, American Sign Language lessons with the youngsters, and so much more! The students also got to participate in a vote for Ms. Emily’s hair color! Stay tuned to see what else is happening this summer at SLP!

Week 1 of the Summer Learning Program was a resounding success! We launched the first week with approximately 75 kids each day and embarked on a plethora of thrilling activities! From read-alouds, arts and crafts, and yard games to our first field trip of the summer to Memorial Park, SLP was abuzz with excitement our first week. The theme of the summer, Vegetables and Gardening, inspired everyone to work together to plant our summer garden, and each student got to take home their own plants, perfectly complementing our weekly chapter book, Garlic and the Vampire! Staying true to the veggie and food theme, we organized themed Bingo, where our winners earned the chance to don a real sombrero if they desired! To promote positivity we had the kids write kind phrases about themselves in chalk on the sidewalk. These are just a few of the wonderful and exciting plans we have in store for this summer, so stay tuned for what's to come!

The SCRC kicked off the summer with Leaders In Training back in June! LIT consisted of 2 daily meals on campus, leadership activities, guest speakers, and much more! The students got to work one one-on-one with each other and staff, in groups, or alone on different leadership opportunities like chair races, a ropes course, forming a mock government and more! We were so impressed with the students who got to join us this year and can’t wait to see what next year has in store for us all!
