Everyone will be talking about millage rates over the next few weeks as cities, counties, and school districts set budgets and property tax rates for the coming year.

But what exactly is a millage rate?

A mill is simply $1 of tax for every $1,000 of assessed value. Understanding that one concept makes it much easier to understand how property taxes are calculated.
