Don't Wait, Hydrate!

Summer is here, which means more time outdoors and a greater risk of heat-related illness. Whether you're hiking, kayaking, volunteering, or simply enjoying nature, make hydration a priority.

A good rule of thumb is to start increasing your water intake a day or two before planned outdoor activities and continue drinking water throughout the day.

Take a moment to review the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke below. Knowing what to look for could help keep you—or someone around you—safe this summer.

Calling All Volunteers!

Join us on Thursday, June 18, for a Refuge Trash Pickup at Hagerman NWR! We'll meet at the Visitor Center at 8:00 AM and work together to help keep the refuge beautiful for wildlife and visitors alike.

Be sure to bring plenty of water and dress for the weather.

Can't make it? You can still help! If you're visiting the refuge and notice an area that needs attention, let us know. We can earmark it for a future cleanup.

Thank you for helping us keep Hagerman NWR a wonderful place to explore, learn, and enjoy!

Looking for something fun to do this weekend without spending a fortune? Instead of scrolling Facebook, come spend some time with us at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge!

This Saturday is our Second Saturday class featuring Dr. Tim Patton and Lake Texoma: A 4D View of Lake Ecology. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., this fascinating presentation will explore the fundamentals of lake ecology with a special focus on Lake Texoma. Registration is available online: https://friendsofhagerman.com/event-6514950/Registration

If you'd rather start your morning outdoors, join our monthly Bird Walk at 8:00 a.m. Our last walk featured an impressive variety of birds, including buntings and grosbeaks, and we're excited to see what this month brings.

Also happening Saturday, our Butterfly Garden will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Take a stroll through the garden, enjoy the blooming flowers, and learn about the butterflies and plants from our volunteer butterfly docents.

Whether you're interested in birds, butterflies, ecology, or simply enjoying nature, there's something for everyone this weekend. We hope to see you there!

It was a humid morning at the refuge, after heavy rain over the weekend. So there were areas that we could not count in due to muddy conditions. The lake level is up even more so there are still no mudflats.Canada Geese are very much in evidence with a count of 196 today. Probably the best sighting of the day was a family of Black-and-white Warblers and a couple of White-breasted Nuthatches at Sandy Point. We heard a Louisiana Waterthrush singing near the fishing hole on Bennett Ln. We saw 5 Mississippi Kites on the way to Meadow pond. We saw or heard 5 Yellow-billed Cuckoos. 6 Killdeer were the only shorebirds of the day. We counted 46 Great Egrets, 25 Snowy Egrets, 6 Little Blue Herons, 3 Green Herons and one Tricolored Heron. We finished the day with 62 species.

🦦 Have you ever spotted a river otter at Hagerman?

River otters do call Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge home, but they're among our more elusive residents. These playful mammals spend much of their time traveling waterways, hunting for fish, and staying hidden from view. Their natural curiosity can make for an exciting encounter, but those encounters are often brief and unpredictable.

In fact, some visitors spend years exploring the refuge without ever seeing an otter, while others are lucky enough to catch a glimpse on their very first visit!

If you hope to spot one, patience is key. Watch quietly along creeks, sloughs, and shoreline areas, especially during the cooler parts of the day. Even if the otters remain hidden, remember that every visit to the refuge offers something new to discover.

Have you ever seen a river otter at Hagerman? How long did it take before you spotted your first otter? Tell us about your sighting in the comments! 🦦

🌿 What an incredible day at Nature'Ology! 🌿

Our young naturalists (ages 10–12) spent the day exploring the wonders of nature through hands-on activities, discovery, and plenty of adventure. From meeting live spiders and snakes to examining skins and skulls, learning about fascinating beetles, and creating their own terrariums to take home, there was excitement around every corner.

The smiles, curiosity, and enthusiasm from the kids made the day truly special. To top it all off, we enjoyed some delicious watermelon and beautiful weather as the skies cleared just in time for a perfect afternoon.

A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers who helped make this program such a success. Your dedication and knowledge created an unforgettable experience for these young explorers. We couldn't do it without you!

Thank you to all the families who joined us, and we hope to see everyone again for future programs at Hagerman. 💚

🚨 Life Hack: How to donate to the Friends of Hagerman using Kroger’s money. 🤫

Want to support the Friends of Hagerman NWR without spending an extra cent of your own cash?

Next time you’re at Kroger, step up to the Customer Service Counter and ask them to connect your Kroger rewards card to Friends of Hagerman.

Once it's linked, Kroger handles the rest—donating a percentage of your everyday grocery purchases directly to the refuge. You buy your cereal, the refuge gets the support, and Kroger picks up the tab.

It takes about 60 seconds at the counter but makes a massive difference for our local wildlife and community programs. Stop by the desk on your next trip! 🌾🦌

Early on it was pleasant with a northeast breeze blowing. The lake level continues above normal with no mudflats present so the only shorebird was a Killdeer. Canada Geese was the most numerous species with a count of 236. Early on a Barn Owl was spotted near headquarters. Also an Eastern Screech Owl, not old enough to have fledged was seen in the hollow of a power pole. There was a Black-chinned Hummingbird spotted near headquarters. 17 Painted Buntings were seen or heard singing. We also had 9 Indigo Buntings and 4 Blue Grosbeaks. A Black-and-white Warbler was heard singing near Basin Springs on the far west side of the refuge. A couple of Prothonotary Warblers were near the low water crossing on Bennett as well as 3 Yellow-crowned Night Herons. There were 3 White Ibises and 2 Red-Headed Woodpeckers at Deaver pond. We finished the day with 72 species.
