We won’t be at any markets this week. Our remaining markets will be September 26 and October 3 in Jamestown and October 7 in Dunkirk. Come stock up for winter!

PS: The fall harvest looks promising. We have 85 honey supers out, and the goldenrod has looked good, so we are optimistic…but there are never any guarantees in beekeeping 🙄🤣

We’re at the Dunkirk Market (Cliffstar and Ruggles) until 2 today. One thing that sets this market apart is that it’s under a pavilion so even if it’s raining, you can stay dry while shopping. This is our last market in Dunkirk for the season. (The market continues until October 14–we just won’t be here). Come stock up on honey for the winter!

Sam’s 13th swarm of the season! For perspective, he might get 3 swarms in a typical season.

Conventional beekeeping wisdom in our area says that collecting swarms this late in the season is a waste of time: the bees will not have time to stockpile enough honey to survive the winter. But in this case, Sam wanted to add these bees to a small hive that had gone queenless. Will they survive the winter? Maybe not…but they definitely would not have survived without a queen. At least now they have a chance.

We got swarm #12 last Friday! This one was especially fun because Sam did absolutely nothing for it 🤣. He checked a hive at our Tanner Road bee yard about noon expecting to prepare it to be combined with another hive Friday night. When he opened the hive at noon, it was empty—not a bee. He went back at 8:30 thinking he would put the new hive on the empty box. As he got closer, he realized the “empty box” was buzzing. Sometime between noon and 8:30 pm, a swarm had moved in to the box. And not just any swarm—a huge swarm. There’s a house on Tanner Road that has a hive in the walls, and it swarms periodically so that’s where we think this one came from.
