We extend our thoughts, prayers, and unwavering support to the Carbon County Sheriff's Office and the family of the deputy who was critically injured in the line of duty yesterday afternoon near Baggs, WY.

Yesterday's violent encounter serves as a stark and sobering reminder of the profound dangers law enforcement officers willingly face every single day to protect the citizens of Wyoming. When one of our brothers or sisters in blue is attacked, the impact is deeply felt across our entire state's peace officer family.

PRESS RELEASE: OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING
DATE: 06082026

On Monday, June 8th, dispatchers with the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a man with a gun in Baggs, located in southwestern Carbon County.

The subject opened fire on the initial responding deputy, striking him several times.

The suspect fled the scene in a small truck. Additional responding deputies and troopers with the Wyoming Highway Patrol engaged in a pursuit with the suspect vehicle on Highway 789 north of Baggs. The suspect opened fire on law enforcement again before driving off the highway and coming to a stop. The suspect was declared deceased at the scene.

The wounded deputy was transported to a medical facility in Colorado by Intermountain Air Ambulance.

Additional units from agencies across the state responded to assist.

The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.

Please keep our injured deputy and their family in your thoughts and prayers.

This week is Detention Deputies Week, and we want to take a moment to recognize the dedicated men and women who serve behind the walls every day.

Detention Deputies play a critical role in public safety—maintaining order, ensuring security, and managing individuals during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Their work often goes unseen, but it is essential to the safety of our communities.

The job requires professionalism, patience, resilience, and a commitment to doing what’s right, even when it’s not easy. From long hours to difficult situations, detention staff continue to show up and do the job with integrity.

Please join us in thanking our detention officers for their service, sacrifice, and dedication.

Public Advisory – No Unnecessary Travel

Due to hazardous road conditions across Sheridan County, all motorists are asked to avoid unnecessary travel on county roads until conditions improve. Accumulating snow and reduced visibility are creating dangerous driving conditions. County snow plow drivers are reporting 3-4 foot drifts in some areas and due to the current weather conditions, plow trucks are having difficulty keeping the county roads cleared at this time.

If travel is essential, use extreme caution, carry emergency supplies, and inform others of your route and expected arrival time.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
March 24, 2026
Portion of Red Grade Road will open to wheeled vehicles on March 25, 2026:

The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office and Sheridan County Road and Bridge have determined it is safe for wheeled vehicles to operate on a portion of Red Grade Road. At 7:00 AM, Wednesday, March 25th, 2026, Red Grade Road will be open to wheeled vehicles from the snowmobile turnouts to Long Park.

Due to snow and road conditions beyond Long Park, the portion of Red Grade Road west of Long Park will remain closed to wheeled vehicles until it is determined safe and the potential risk to resource damage is reduced.

The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office, along with Sheridan County Road and Bridge, will continue to monitor the closed portion of Red Grade Road and will open to wheeled vehicles, once the snow clears.

The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public to be mindful of any Bighorn National Forest Service Road closures within the forest service boundary and follow the forest service laws related to snowmobiles and tracked vehicles. Forest Service Roads are closed to wheeled vehicles until April 1st.

“The propensity for resource damage is very high during this time of year,” Sheriff Levi Dominguez said, “so we would greatly appreciate the public’s help in reducing resource damage by operating wheeled vehicles on open roads and remember to not leave the roadways and please be mindful of the Bighorn National Forest Service’s road closures.”

The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office will provide updates when further changes are made to the status of Red Grade Road.
