Students from non-regents geometry recently completed a scale model project of Shelter Island in 1776. The interactive map will be on display at the Shelter Island History Museum to celebrate the Semi-quincentennial of the United States in Summer 2026.

In order to build the components of the model students had to utilize their understanding of scale factor, design thinking, and problem solving in conjunction. Students made use of the district C&C router to cut out the shape of the island, and then modeled 3D components in CAD software so that it could be printed using a Flash Forge 3D printer.

A special thank you to Vernessa Kingsbury, associate director of SIHM, and alumni Justine Karen, archivist at SIHM, for spearheading this hands on learning opportunity for select 9th grade students.
