The members of the Sheldon Fire Department send our deepest condolences to the family of Firefighter Phillips and the members of the Raymond NH Fire Department.

Firefighter Eric Phillips, 44
Raymond Fire Department, Raymond, NH
Firefighter Phillips died after he suffered a medical emergency while on a call for service. He was transported to the Exeter Hospital, and despite the efforts of his fellow first responders he died at the hospital.

Sheldon Firefighters recently performed vehicle extrication training. Members utilized our HURST battery powered JAWS OF LIFE as well as our older hydraulic tools. The newer technology proved much faster and more powerful. Sheldon Fire Department would like to thank Tdi Towing for providing the cars for our members to stay proficient at this important skill.

Sheldon Firefighters recently reorganized our compartments to allow better storage and deployment of the life saving equipment during emergencies.TDI Towing

Sheldon Firefighters created a window prop that utilizes sheetrock to simulate windows. This realistic training requires the use of hand tools to gain access, then they sound the floor to ensure they are entering onto a solid floor. In the pictures Sheldon Firefighters are performing VES Vent, Enter, Search drills. The training also introduced some members into an emergency escape procedure called hook 2 grab 4 which allows the firefighter to exit very low through the window frame and quickly escape the upper floor when conditions are deteriorating rapidly.

Sheldon Fire Department was dispatched at 16:38 to Mill St below the papermill for 2 kayakers that had capsized in the class 3 rapids. Communications with one of the individuals determined that they were not injured and 1 individual was on shore, but the 2nd was on a rock in the middle of the rapidly flowing river. Colchester Technical Rescue was requested for a Swiftwater team, and Sheldon Firefighters took up safety positions on both sides of the river downstream. The Swiftwater team was able to traverse part way across the river and pass a line, life jacket and helmet to the victim and pendulum him across the rapids. There were no injuries and everyone went home safely. Sheldon Fire is thankful to Colchester Technical Rescue for their rapid response and technical skills.

Sheldon Fire Department Firefighters have been active protecting neighbors, performing training and reorganizing Engine 1's Rescue tool compartments. This morning 6/12/26 9 members responded to assist the Franklin Fire Department with extinguishing a house fire. Additional photo's show members pump testing Engine 1 as part of their pump operators class. Engine 1 is pumping just over 1,500 Gallons per minute in the photo. Numerous members attended the North Country Fire School in Alburgh last weekend. Recently members added dividers and a carousel to allow for better storage and deployment of our Jaws of Life and Rescue Q Jacks. Always something to do at the Sheldon Fire Department, if this sounds like something you would like to be apart of we meet every Thursday evening.

Sheldon Firefighters were assisted by Franklin, Enosburgh and Highgate firefighters in controlling and extinguishing a 23.88 acre brush fire off the Gilman Rd. Monday 4/27/26. Sheldon Fire was dispatched at 5:06 PM and quickly realized it was a substantial size fire requiring additional personnel and equipment. A portion of the burned area had undergone a logging operation and a large amount of slash was resulting in 8 foot high flames. Firefighting UTV’s were able to access the fire area and control fire spread within about 1 hour. The approximately 50 Firefighters on scene over hauled the area and returned equipment to service by 11:00 PM. Enosburgh Ambulance provided on scene EMS coverage for Firefighters. Chief Piaseczny wanted to thank everyone for a great job and the gracious support from Jenessa and Sam Gervais from Franklin for food and beverage. Appreciated by all.

Sheldon Firefighters responded to assist Fairfield with a brush fire 4/23 at 4:30.
At 6 Engine 1,2 the Tanker and Rescue drafted and flushed multiple dry hydrants.

Sheldon Firefighters had a busy productive day Thursday April 9, 2026. Shortly after 2PM Engine 1 with 10 firefighters responded to Franklin to assist with a brush fire. The fire was quickly brought under control and the Sheldon Forestry unit and additional firefighters were canceled while enroute. Shortly after returning to the Station Engine 1&2 responded just after 4PM to the Pond road in Swanton for a fire in the attic of a large sugar house. Damage was controlled by the quick work of the property owner Sheldon and Swanton Firefighters. Sheldon Firefighters returned by 5:30 and started Thursday evening training at 6. The photo’s are members simulating the first due engine arriving at a fire and making the initial stretch and the second due engine supporting operations. Members drafted from 2 different dry hydrants and members participating in the driver operators class got some time behind the steering wheel.
