How and why does Shelby County EMA monitor storms and make decisions?
Part of the job is preventing and mitigating loss of life due to natural disasters. While yelling at the sky has yet to be effective, providing our communities with information helps, and by sharing the tools I use, I can empower you to be proactive in your own safety.
While my direct communication with NWS is secured through Slack, I also use the following tools that anyone has access to.
For timing and prediction models:

For radar and storm chaser information:

As a note, public pages do not require an account to view them!
Here's how I put this information to use:
Step 1.
EMA receives daily reports from the National Weather Service (NWS) about what to expect. If this report indicates a threat of severe weather that could endanger our communities, we broadcast the information here, with updates as needed.
Step 2.
Hours before the event, I begin monitoring conditions alongside our partners at NWS, IEMA-OHS, media, and storm chasers.
Step 3.
Shortly before or sometimes during the event, I may send out critical informational updates through our TextMyGov system. Individuals must manually opt-in to receive these by texting SHELBYCOUNTY to 91896.
Step 4.
Shortly before or during the event, and if there is a verified threat to a community, and NWS is unable to do so, I will send out an Emergency Alert. For example, if a storm chaser has witnessed a tornado forming.
Step 5.
During the event, stay in contact with our emergency responders, work crews, and community members. Feeding them critical informational updates as I receive them and receiving information that I can pass to you.
Step 6.
Restock my coffee supply!
I hope this information was helpful. The closer we work together, the better the chances of preventing tragedy.
Thank you,
Scott McKee
