There will be an open house at the new Juvenile Detention Center, 114 Northcreek Drive in Shelbyville (next door to Bedford County Justice Complex), Thursday, Sept. 24 from 6-7 p.m. The public is invited.

This new facility will replace the current detention center on Lane Parkway, just off the square.

This is the first in a series of open house events at various county departments.

County Archivist Carol Roberts gave Leadership Bedford, TN members a tour of the historic Bedford County Courthouse on Wednesday morning. To arrange for a courthouse tour, contact the archives office at 931-735-6916.

A big thanks to Bedford County Chamber of Commerce for honoring emergency responders during its quarterly luncheon yesterday. Our county honorees included Bedford County Sheriff's Office TN, Bedford County Fire Department, Bedford County Emergency Management Agency, Bedford County Emergency Medical Service, Bedford County E-911 Com Center, Bedford County Animal Control, TN, and recently-retired Sheriff Austin Swing.

There has been a slight adjustment to the venue for next week's Bedford County Battle of The Badges Blood Drive. The blood drive will now be held in Blue Ribbon Circle, rather than in Cooper Steel Arena. It will run from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Donors should enter through the arched Celebration gates on Madison Street.

The blood drive is open to the public, and local emergency service agencies are competing to see how many donors each one can recruit. When you give, you can state which department you want to support.

Brandy's in Wartrace will offer a free drink or dessert to each donor. Glass Hollow Table & Tavern on the square in Shelbyville will offer a free pint of b**r to each donor. Clements Dental will donate $4 per donor to a scholarship fund, and the winning emergency department will get to pick which high school will get to award the scholarship. "Battle of the Badges" T-shirts will be given out while supplies last.

Although walk-ins will be accepted, scheduling your appointment will help minimize your wait time. You can schedule a time by going to https://www.bloodassurance.org/bedfordcobattle2 . Donors must be 17 or older, or 16 with a completed parental permission form.

Blood Assurance provides blood products to numerous hospitals in the area, including Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital, and your donations could save the life of a friend, neighbor or family member. Please support this worthy event!

Bedford County Board of Commissioners will hold a special called meeting 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the historic Bedford County Courthouse on the square, following the regularly scheduled committee meetings.

The purpose of this meeting is to consider the appeal of the lawsuit by the City of Shelbyville vs. Bedford County.

Defenders of Freedom & Liberty hosted a 9/11 observance Friday morning at VFW Post 5019 Shelbyville, TN. County Mayor Curt Cobb and 9/11 responder Dave Rogers of Cooking with a Veteran were the featured speakers. "Taps" was played, and law enforcement officers rang a bell to remember 9/11 first responders.

Rogers discussed his long history with the World Trade Center, which he visited as a child, his work at Ground Zero and the resulting health problems.

Cobb spoke about seeing the bust of Daniel McClenney on the first floor of Bedford County Courthouse and being reminded of McClenney's sacrifice in the military campaigns that followed 9/11. He also spoke about the courage of first responders, running towards Ground Zero as others were fleeing the area.

"People were afraid, but they acted anyway," said Cobb.

Defenders of Freedom and Liberty also placed thousands of flags, representing the 2,977 people who died in the 9/11 attacks, on the floodgate on West Holland Street just off the Shelbyville square.

Agendas and packets have been posted online for Bedford County Board of Commissioners' Rules and Legislative Committee, Public Safety Committee, and Courthouse and County Property Committee, which will meet Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the historic Bedford County Courthouse on the square in Shelbyville.

The Rules Committee will meet at 5 p.m., immediately followed by the Public Safety Committee and then the Courthouse Committee.

Public seating is available for all three committee meetings, and the meetings will also be livestreamed on the county's YouTube channel, . There will be a time at each meeting for the public to speak on agenda items from that meeting.
