Bedford County Mayor Chad Graham, who did not seek re-election and will leave office at the end of August, reviewed his two terms and discussed the state of the county during a speech Wednesday morning to Rotary Club of Shelbyville, TN at Emmy's Restaurant on North Main Street.

Bedford County's growth over the past eight years has presented both opportunities and challenge. Graham noted that school building programs have, for the moment, eliminated the need for portable classrooms. Public safety agencies got new equipment and a more-competitive pay structure, allowing them to better retain employees.

Broadband service, which has moved from being a luxury to being a necessity for many households, has been expanded, with Bedford recently certified as an 8-Gig community by United Communications.

Many local residents were startled by their recently appraised property values, but under Tennessee law, reappraisals are supposed to be revenue-neutral; the county property tax rate will be lowered to reflect the higher property values, so most people should see close to the same final property tax bill, unless they've made improvements to their property.

Graham said that he and other members of county government pay taxes, and are fully cognizant of the responsibility they have for wise use of taxpayer dollars.

"Every penny we spend is yours," said Graham.
