Shelburne Falls Glacial Potholes

Shelburne Falls Glacial Potholes These days, the geologically fascinating glacial potholes are drawing visitors.

The Native Americans called this area Salmon Falls, and the fishing here was so fine that warring tribes made an agreement that they wouldn’t fight each other within one day’s walk of the falls. Ever since the end of the last Ice Age, stones trapped swirling in the riverbed have been grinding into the rock bed below, creating more than 50 near-perfect circles. The largest known glacial pothole in the world is here, with a diameter of 39ft. -- Lonely Planet New England

Friday is Moonlight Magic in Shelburne Falls. The Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum will be running our 126-year-old trolley for evening rides. Come ride the trolley, which is decorated in holiday lights, for a novel trip back in time. Our 100-year-old caboose will be at Salmon Falls Gallery, lighted for the holiday as well. You can come inside the caboose for a unique view of the bustling holiday village below. In the caboose, trolley passengers can get cookies and hot drinks and warm up by the pot-bellied stove. You can buy tickets at the caboose or at the Visitors Center. Moonlight Magic discounts are available for toys and railroad-related gifts at the Visitors Center. We are giving rides from 4pm to 8pm, come early to avoid the rush!
