Construction on Erie Avenue starts Wednesday! Please see the release for more information on detours and accessibility to local businesses.

Road Closure - Erie Avenue (North Taylor Drive to North 19th Street)

Road construction on Erie Avenue between North Taylor Drive and North 19th Street will begin the week of June 8, 2026. The construction includes storm sewer improvements, new crosswalks and pedestrian ramps, concrete panel replacements, milling of the existing pavement and asphalt paving.

This work will close Erie Avenue between North Taylor Drive and North 19th Street to through traffic with access allowed to local properties. The intersection of Erie Avenue/North 25th Street/Wilgus Road will be closed for a complete reconstruction between July 6, 2026 and August 3, 2026. The posted detour will utilize Kohler Memorial Drive and North Taylor Drive. After August 3, 2026 this intersection will be re-opened to through traffic for northbound and southbound North 25th Street with access to Wilgus Road but through access on Erie Avenue will still be prohibited.

Residences in the construction area will have access during construction. There will be limited times during pavement removals, placement of new concrete base and asphalt paving operations when driveway access will be prohibited. The contractor will coordinate the closure times with affected residents prior to removal work occurring.

The construction is tentatively scheduled to be completed in October.

All work and traffic impacts are weather-dependent and subject to change.

The City of Sheboygan understands the inconvenience experienced during road construction and appreciates your patience and cooperation as we work to complete this project. Please use caution and slow-down in construction zones.

The City of Sheboygan is hosting a public open house for the proposed Sheboygan Movable Pedestrian Bridge. The proposed bridge would span over the Sheboygan River, connecting Virginia Avenue with South Pier Drive for pedestrians and bicyclists, providing better access to the Sheboygan River waterfront and Lake Michigan.

This project is the result of a Federal RAISE grant awarded to the City. The purpose of this open house is to share the preferred bridge alternative, answer public questions, and collect feedback on the project. Members of the project team will be at the Open House to provide information and answer questions.

The City of Sheboygan was recently involved in Safety Days intended to make Sheboygan's transportation system safer for all users. Projects included traffic calming to slow traffic, increase crosswalk visibility, and reduce crossing distance.

As part of Safety Days, several sessions were held at numerous sites over a 2-day period where staff, partners and citizens engaged in helpful and productive conversations about safety and transportation issues important to them. Citizens were both engaged and interested in learning more about the initiative and ways to be involved.

You can still get involved! To submit a comment or learn more about this project, please visit https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36de4de26f6045e4808353d5c1acaba2
