A Piece of Shawnee History will be opened

SHAWNEE, Okla. — Some moments in history only happen once. On Saturday, September 26, at 9:30 a.m., the City of Shawnee Parks & Recreation Department will invite the community to the opening of the Washington School Time Capsule, placed there almost 100 years ago. The community is invited to join at the Shawnee Community Center, 804 S. Park Street, for this very special morning.

The former Washington School building, located inside Farrall Park, is scheduled to be demolished ahead of the new Farrall Park renovation project. Inside the building, a time capsule has remained hidden all these years.

Former Washington School students, teachers, staff, families, and community members are especially invited. If you went to Washington School, or know someone who did, all are welcome.

Opening this capsule marks the closing of a chapter in the story of Washington School, but there is also excitement as we look ahead. Thanks to an incredible gift from the Avedis Foundation, a new multimillion-dollar Farrall Park will give this community a place to gather, play, and create new memories for generations to come.

OBU has such a positive impact on our community, for many reasons. This week, as part of their welcome week activities, OBU students served Shawnee.

Students served at the library, Shawnee Splash, Sister Cities Park, Woodland Park, Rose Garden and Main Street. We greatly appreciate the work these students did for the park system and our city. It saved us labor costs which saved tax dollars. It also helped emotionally pep up our staff that has been working so hard in this heat. THANK YOU OBU STUDENTS

100°+ Days, and They Keep Going

We are in the middle of some record-breaking heat here in Shawnee, with temperatures around 100° for what feels like forever. Our parks maintenance crew is responsible for maintaining more than 600 acres of green space — mowing our parks, Fairview Cemetery, in-town right-of-ways, lake right-of-ways, and our lake parks.

That is a LOT of grass, and they do it in some pretty tough conditions.

We appreciate every one of them and the hard work they put in to keep Shawnee looking good. Please help us give a big thank you to our Parks crew for the many hours trying to keep up and making our parks fun and safe to play in!
