Each raised $500,000 to build the Shawnee Senior Center, which then became a City building and is maintained by the City Parks and Recreation Dept. Senior Citizens of Shawnee, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization whose Board of Directors come from senior-related organizations, businesses and services as well as at-large members of the Shawnee Community. An Executive Director manages the day-to-day activ

ities on behalf of the Board. SSC received the management contract for the Municipal Auditorium (aka "The MUNI") in 2007 and together with the City began the process of upgrading the building for public use. Since 2007 the MUNI has received or upgraded:
1) fire suppression system
2) new lighting
3) plaster repairs to stage facing and walls
4) painted walls
5) men and women restrooms
6) electric lifts for basketball hoops
7) stripped and maintained original terrazzo floors in the lobby
8) building re-pointing the stone and cleaning of exterior
9) new windows
10) murals in foyer
11) refurbishing of existing and installation of vintage trophy cases
12) Electrical upgrade for sound and lighting equipment use

Shawnee Senior Center (SSC) supports activities through:
1) Grants - Central Oklahoma Economic Development District (COEDD) and AVEDIS Foundation support the Senior Fitness Program. Walmart and Shawnee Milling Company currently support our breakfast program.
2) We have an active in-house fundraising program - collecting funds for facility rentals, pop machines and sale of snacks and coffee.
3) We also receive support from the generosity of Pottawatomie County citizens who made permanent, a portion of a one-cent sales tax. This money, which is divided among the ten senior centers and two senior agencies, can be used on any expense that is relevant to all seniors, such as food, cleaning supplies, office supplies, facility upgrades (handicap accessibility), etc. SSC activities are scheduled during daytime hours and the building is often rented in the evenings for any number and type of activities. The Shawnee Senior Center is a busy recreational facility for persons 50 years of age and up. Our motto is "Age is just a number!"

Regular activities include: Enhance Fitness and Tai Chi: Working for Better Balance - both injury prevention exercise programs for our participants. We offer the following special health services:
1) Weekly Mini-health Check provided by Pam Sing and Nancy Carlson, volunteers from Heartland Hospice
2) Massage Therapy by Tammy Cotton, a licensed massage therapist - which works especially well for our clients with aches, pains and high stress lives. Tammy's services are by appointment and there is are fees beginning from 15min for $15 to 60min for $60.
3) Dr. Sandra Choney, Clinical Psychologist, provides counseling services, by appointment, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We also have a wide range of regular events such as Woodcarving, Live music & dancing (2x p/week), Gospel Singing (2x p/wk), zero-impact aerobics, Pottery with Bridget, dominoes, life size checkers, billiards, card games and much more...
