Today, the Shawano Area Fire Department pauses to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend — it is a day of reflection, gratitude, and respect for those who gave everything to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

We also extend our deepest appreciation to all veterans, active-duty military members, and the families who stand beside them through every sacrifice.

From all of us at the Shawano Area Fire Department, thank you to our fallen heroes. We remember you today and always. 🇺🇸

This morning we practiced some confined space rescue training. This training is critical for several applications to help get individuals out of tight spaces. Thank you to Chris Hohol from Fire LLC for the training.

To All Mothers — Especially the Mothers of Firefighters

Today, we honor the women who give their hearts endlessly to their families, their children, and their communities. Mothers are the quiet strength behind so many of life’s greatest moments — offering love, support, guidance, and sacrifice every single day.

To the mothers of firefighters, thank you for raising sons and daughters who choose to serve others. Your courage, prayers, and unwavering support travel with us on every call. The strength you instilled in us is carried into every act of service.

To the moms currently serving in the fire service, thank you for balancing the demands of motherhood with the commitment to protect others. Your dedication inspires us all.

And to every mother — whether by birth, step, adoption, mentorship, or memory — today we celebrate you and the impact you make every day.

From all of us at the fire department, Happy Mother’s Day.

**BALSAM ROW RD DAM UPDATE**

Crews have been hard at work building up 3–4-foot sand berms on both sides of the dam. While we are unable to stop the rising water levels, these efforts are designed to protect the embankments and direct overflow across the concrete portion of the dam. The water is still rising, but the rate has significantly slowed compared to just a few hours ago.

Dam operators remain on site and are closely monitoring conditions. Emergency coordinators will be notified immediately if there are any signs of structural concerns or potential failure.

At this time, evacuations are NOT necessary. However, we strongly encourage residents to have a plan in place should conditions change.

We are working closely with local partner agencies and have shelter plans ready if needed. At this point, we are confident in the mitigation efforts completed so far.

We will continue to provide updates as conditions evolve. Please stay alert and follow official channels for the latest information.

Public Notice: Balsam Row Rd Dam

We have been notified that the Balsam Row Rd Dam, just north of Shawano, is at risk of failure. Water has crested over the top of the dam, and because the dam is not fully functional, there are limited options to reduce the threat at this time.

If you live along the river south of the dam, please have a plan in place and be prepared to leave quickly if conditions worsen.

At this time, no official evacuation order has been issued. However, residents in the affected area should closely monitor the situation and be ready to act if further emergency notifications are issued.

Text 54166 to 888777 to receive further alerts. We will do our best to keep everyone aware of this ongoing situation via text alerts and Facebook.
