What a great day to spend the morning and early afternoon at our Pine Run roadside and mountainside cleanup in Hanover Township off SR 309 on the PA DCNR Crystal Lake Tract of the Pinchot State Forest with nearly 40 volunteers and our partner, the Luzerne Conservation District.

We had a surprise visit from Congressman Rob Bresnahan Jr. and Chelsea who signed off on a big $1500 check from their Greenlight Fund to continue to support our cleanup efforts and tire 🛞 recycling ♻️ in between having been to a parade in Scranton in the morning and going back up to Moosic Mountain to throw out a first pitch tonight at a Railriders game. We appreciate the support and the funding that came through The Luzerne Foundation, another amazing partner and financial supporter of EPCAMR over the years on many programs and projects.

Shout out to the volunteers for doing the dirty work in cleaning up the entire mountainside and roadside that was littered for too many years based on the types of tires we found and the litter. Keystone Job Corps came once again with some young men and women who worked hard in the heat and amongst the cat briars. Verdantas was present. PA American Water was present. Our AmeriCorps VISTA Mark Jones was a big help in organizing the event along with Maria Gereda. Michael Hewitt hailed our Polaris ETX for us which was a huge help. Chris Orourke was a big help today as usual too! Keith George also brought the Conservation District’s Polaris too! We made quick work of the piles and tires along the pole line. JD Ashford Arts took some photos that he will share with us as well that he was taking in between lending a hand himself. Putting on another few hats, Bobby and JD Ashford are members of the Stanley Cooper Chapter Trout Unlimited and the No. 61 F & AM.

Thanks to Hanover Township Police Department, the Hanover Township Road Department who will pick up the trash on Monday, and The tire guys that already picked up the approximate 120 car tires of all sizes before 3:30 as planned. The neighbors across the street came over and volunteered as well and sure appreciated the work.

The Utility Company gave us access to the right of way and we partnered with PA DCNR to help recruit even more Conservation volunteers for them in case they wanted to help in other cleanups in other State Parks. I’m sure there will be more pictures to follow! If I had to guess how many bags of trash were picked up there were over 60 and a bunch of rugs and carpets as well as metal. If anyone is a scrapper and wants to take the one pile that is separated have at it. If you wanted to donate some back to EPCAMR, we’d gladly accept it.

Pine Run now is clean and pristine again. The trout are happy and so are the salamanders like the Slimy spotted salamander that was found today in one of the rugs. The hatches off the water were pleased too! Bobby Hughes and the EPCAMR Staff would like to thank everyone for showing up and making a huge difference. King’s pizza was great too and although we fell a little short on food, Bobby ended up taking a few of the guys out afterwards for pizza at Dino’s up at the Wyoming Valley Mall.

Honey bee swarms and established colonies can appear in trees, walls, sheds, or other structures. Bees are important pollinators, but should be handled carefully. beeswarmed.org provides a free public reporting tool to connect residents with local beekeepers for safe honey bee removal and relocation. Beekeepers can assess the situation and arrange humane bee removal without the need for extermination. This protects pollinators, reduces unnecessary emergency calls, and supports local agriculture.

Over 170 students representing 35 teams from 8 different high schools competed in the 47th Annual Luzerne County Envirothon held at YMCA Camp Kresge on April 21st. Greater Nanticoke Area's "Team A" took first place and will be representing Luzerne County at the Pennsylvania Envirothon state competition on May 20th. MMI's "Team A" and Crestwood's "Team E" took 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

We like to thank all the volunteers, partnering agencies/organizations, and sponsors for supporting this great program that connects students to environmental, conservation, and natural resource concepts!

Despite the rain, we decided to take a trip down to Shickshinny today to hike a very steep section of State Game Lands 260 locally seen from SR11 across from the Mocanaqua Bridge (SR239) that was the former E.S. Stackhouse Colliery and a part of the 5 Mountains, to test one of many abandoned mine drainage (AMD) discharges along the mountain in the Paddy Run Valley. This is not an easy trek up the steep slopes along the culm banks and glacial outcrops and slippery conditions of the woods at this time of year.

We have been approved only to monitor one of the discharges at this time. Many local residents and people who drive by will usually see a beautiful cascading waterfall that flows beneath SR11 before the water flows into the Susquehanna River. What may people might not realize is that the entire drainage area and stream, which normally doesn’t flow year round, due to water loss into the mine workings that only re-emerges during storm events, Spring melt, and when the underground mine pools spill over along the mountainside.

Today was the first time we could sample the upstream area just north of the AMD discharge from the 4” rusted out pipe and the pipe discharge itself.

The results were not encouraging and although our flows were estimated using a pipe full calculation and a flow meter on the upstream and downstream locations on Paddy Run, there is nothing clean about the mine water, although it looks very clean and pristine. We will be sampling the same three locations for the next year monthly and dying a high flow rain event and a low flow period should there be a drought condition over the next 12 months.

The Paddy Run AMD Pipe discharge field sampling results are as follows and several sample bottles were filled and prepared for the lab where and AMD suite of parameters will be tested at Hawk Mountain Labs in Hazleton.

3.8 degrees Celsius
12.35 mg/L of Dissolved Oxygen
27.2 ms/cm of Conductivity
22.9 mg/L of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
4.84 pH (very acidic)
11.3 mV Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP)
Flow was 50 gallons per minute (gpm) and going over a the vertical sandstone rock wall downstream before flowing into Paddy Run

Paddy Run Upstream
3.2 degrees Celsius
13.81 mg/L of Dissolved Oxygen
36.3 ms/cm of Conductivity
31.3 mg/L of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
4.39 pH (very acidic)
39.7 mV Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP)
Flow was 587.96 gallons per minute

Paddy Run Downstream
3.2 degrees Celsius
13.81 mg/L of Dissolved Oxygen
36.3 ms/cm of Conductivity
31.3 mg/L of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
4.39 pH (very acidic)
39.7 mV Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP)
Flow was 973.96 gallons per minute

Bobby, Maria, and Stanley made the trek and set out and accomplished their mission today of getting the AMD discharge sampled and obtain flow and some field measurements with their YSI multi-parameter probe.

EPCAMR is partnering with Larson Design Group, the PA Game Commission-State Game Lands 260, and the Luzerne Conservation District on this watershed AMD assessment project.

The Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) invites Pennsylvanians to contribute to an ongoing effort to document and celebrate the barns that define our state’s rural heritage. With information provided, the PA SHPO will create a historic resource record and add your barn to the PA Inventory of Historic Places. While this won’t directly result in a National Register Eligibility determination, it will help researchers, planners, and historic preservation professionals better understand barns as historic resources, build a fuller, more accurate, and more useful picture of Pennsylvania’s historic landscape, and provide the context necessary for supporters to advocate for more preservation outcomes for Pennsylvania’s barns.

The submission process is simple, just answer the following questions and provide at least one photo:

1. What do you call your farm or barn?
2. What is the street address or location?
3. What do you know about the barn?

Proper stormwater pond design and maintenance is critical in reducing flood impacts and pollution, but it is important to prevent mosquitoes from using the ponds as a breeding ground. Since mosquitoes thrive in stagnant standing water, designing ponds that dewater in under 5 days is essential. Maintaining a healthy stand of native plant species in the ponds will also encourage wildlife biodiversity, including species that feed on both mosquito larvae and adults, such as amphibians, birds, dragonflies, etc.

Here is an excerpt from our District’s Mosquito Newsletter highlighting how the Dallas Area Municipal Authority (DAMA) Stormwater Program plays an important part in preventing mosquito emergence through tire cleanups and proper stormwater design.
