The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held a DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoint in the City of Shasta Lake on Saturday, March 29, 2025, during the evening and nighttime hours. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office conducted this checkpoint in accordance with its ongoing efforts to reduce the number of impaired drivers on the road.

As a result of this checkpoint, 544 vehicles were contacted. DUI Saturation Patrols were also conducted in the surrounding area and 6 traffic enforcement stops were made. Eleven (11) DUI evaluations were conducted, and two (2) citations were issued for other violations. There were no DUI arrests made during the checkpoint.

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over the counter medications can interfere with your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and ultimately result in a DUI. Additionally, while
medicinal and recreational ma*****na use is legal to use and possess in the State of California, driving under the influence of ma*****na is illegal.

As always, if you plan on drinking, using cannabis, or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying at home. Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an
average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office reminds citizens to always report suspected impaired drivers on the road. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office is committed to reducing the number of dangerous and drunk drivers on the road, and these checkpoints are just one of the ways we are working to keep Shasta County safe.

On Saturday, March 29, 2025, starting at 6 pm, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the City of Shasta Lake.

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes, DUI arrests, and traffic patterns. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over the counter medications can interfere with your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and ultimately result in a DUI. Public Safety Closure of Sacramento Rive Due to High Water Levels

The current U.S. Bureau of Reclamation water release plan is to continue incrementally increasing river flow into the Sacramento River over the next 2 days. By Friday evening, February 7, 2025, river flows are expected to increase to 60,000 cfs at 10 pm. River flow increases are necessary to create adequate water storage in Shasta Lake. Increased river flow is likely to cause flooding in some areas. The public should also be aware that changing weather conditions and inflow from tributaries and runoff can influence river flows as well.

Homeowners whose properties are adjacent to the Sacramento River should take precautionary measures such as moving personal property to higher ground and/or sandbagging. Sandbag locations in Shasta County can be found by going to www.shastasheriff.org.

River Closure
Due to the increased releases and runoff into the Sacramento River, Sheriff Michael Johnson is closing the Sacramento River to recreational boating in Shasta County below Shasta Dam to the Shasta County line effective 6 pm on Friday, February 7, 2025.

This closure is pursuant to Section 409.5 of the California Penal Code and does not apply to any lakes in Shasta County. People should use common sense and avoid the river and its tributaries until the flows return to normal, at which time this order will be rescinded. The intent of this order is to avoid the unnecessary risk to the recreational river user/boater and rescue personnel. Any violation of this order will be subject to citation or arrest.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is working closely with local municipalities and public safety agencies to ensure that the public is kept informed and updated as the situation develops.

Shasta County Agencies Continue Response to Flooding;
Local State of Emergency Declared

Shasta County, the City of Redding, the City of Anderson, the City of Shasta Lake, and surrounding communities continue to respond to flooding events currently impacting numerous areas of Shasta County. Localized flooding has been and is being experienced and multiple swift water rescues have been conducted.

With more storms forecasted to impact Shasta County in the coming week, at 1853 hours on February 5, 2025, Shasta County Sheriff Michael Johnson declared a local state of emergency. This declaration means that the California State Office of Emergency Services (OES) and allied agencies are mobilized to assist the county with road conditions, search and rescue, and hazard mitigation for this incident, if needed.

County and city public works and public safety officials are responding to reports of impacted area roads and are posting signage and/or closing those areas as needed. During flooding events such as this, the public is reminded to never cross roads that have water flowing across them, no matter if the road is closed or not. If you become stranded or feel you need emergency assistance, call 9-1-1.

Despite periodic breaks in the rain, due to the large amount of precipitation that has fallen, water can continue to flow and rise for quite some time. The public is asked to be vigilant, especially if they live in areas near streams and rivers. Residents are urged to make sure that they are signed up for the AlertShasta emergency notification system. You can sign up or check your status here: https://alertshasta.genasys.com/portal/en .

In addition, in the event evacuations warnings or orders become necessary, the public should become familiar with the Genasys Protect system. Go to https://protect.genasys.com/search enter your address in the search bar, and make note of what zone you are in. In an emergency, first responders can use this system to quickly notify the public of evacuations and more. You can also download the Genasys Protect App from your phone’s app store by searching for “Genasys Protect”.
