James Rosebrock is our 2024 Ezra A. Carman Distinguished Scholarship Award recipient. Over the years, Jim has conducted original research on topics related to the Maryland Campaign. In doing so, he consulted primary sources from archives and repositories and then wove them into compelling narratives for readers. He contributed a number of essays for the "Brigades of Antietam" and for the "Commanders of Antietam". In 2023 he produced the first comprehensive examination of the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia artillery organization, tactics, and strategies during the Maryland Campaign. The over 400 page work incorporates biographical narratives of artillery commanders and first-person accounts from artillery troops. Together these give us a deeper perspective of their experiences on the field. The book also includes seven appendices that provide a wealth of information and resources for students of the campaign. An extra bonus are the accompanying maps, drawn in collaboration with mapmaker Aaron Holley, that illustrate almost hourly the positions and movements of units on the field. This contribution to the Antietam literature has already begun to cause historians, volunteers, and guides to reimagine the battle to account for the often less appreciated role and impact of Confederate and U.S. Artillery units and formations. The book, and his scholarship, has been recognized by reviewers—as one historian noted, 'Artillery at Antietam' is an “excellent reference book and a most welcome addition to the Maryland Campaign and Antietam scholarship.”
