We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Nancy Small, a longtime member of our department and our community.

Nancy played an instrumental role in bringing prehospital emergency care to the Town of Shapleigh and dedicated an incredible 37 years of service to Shapleigh Rescue. Long before EMS became what we know it to be today, Nancy was among those who answered the call and helped build the foundation for EMS in the community.

Nancy's service to Shapleigh extended far beyond the Rescue Squad as she served as an election clerk for 40 years and contributed her time to several town committees throughout her life.

We extend our deepest condolences to Nancy's family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of serving alongside her.

Welcome Deputy Matthew Cu**er! Deputy Cu**er is the newly assigned York County Sheriff's Deputy to fulfill the contract for Acton-Shapleigh, (previously assigned to Deputy Sanborn).

Deputy Cu**er is looking forward to building strong positive relationships with the residents of Shapleigh. With over a decade public safety experience, many may recognize Deputy Cu**er as the previous school resource deputy for RSU57.

Due to the forecasted high temperatures, the Shapleigh Community Center will be open as a cooling center on Wednesday, July 1, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Residents who need relief from the heat are encouraged to stop by and enjoy a cool, air-conditioned space during the hottest part of the day.

Please remember to:

* Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
* Limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.
* Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illness.
* Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.

Please help spread the word to anyone who may benefit from this service. Stay safe and stay cool!

BOAT SMART THIS FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND!

As you head out to enjoy Shapleigh's lakes this holiday weekend, please make safety your top priority.

• Don't leave the dock without the required safety equipment, including properly fitted life jackets for everyone on board, a sound-producing device, navigation lights, and a fire extinguisher.
• Designate a sober operator. Alcohol and boating don't mix.
• Check the weather before heading out, and head to shore if storms approach.
• Operate at a safe speed and stay alert for swimmers, paddlers, and other boaters.
• Let someone know where you're going and when you expect to return.

We want everyone to enjoy a safe and memorable Fourth of July weekend. By making smart decisions on the water, you can help ensure everyone gets home safely.

DO AMBULANCES JUST “GET YOU TO THE HOSPITAL”?
