Adult Falls are the #1 cause of adult injury across the U.S. every year. Today’s icy conditions are very hazardous. Please stay home if you can, treat icy surfaces and if you must go outside, “Walk Like a Penguin” to stay on your feet and out of the hospital!

Tonight will be extremely cold and windy, creating what is known as “wind chill.” These conditions can cause cold weather injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Remember there is no bad weather, just poor clothing choices. Dress for the elements and stay safe!

Shandaken Ambulance had an incredibly busy day on Saturday. We ended up having two auto accidents (both minor accidents), an injured hiker (requiring a hoist lift from the middle of the wilderness), and a medical call that resulted in 5 (no typo..5) patients being transported.

Our crews worked flawlessly- and received help from the following agencies at the height of the simultaneous calls-

Phoenicia fire department
Shandaken Police
Town of Olive Police
Olive fire department
New York State Police
NYS Encon
Ulster County Department of Emergency Services
Olive first aid unit
Woodstock Fire Department
West Hurley Fire Department
Margaretville Hospital EMS

As we normally staff one crew on weekends we end up relying heavily on mutual aid(other entities that come to help from adjoining communities).

It’s not like the City where you have reciprocal resources a couple of blocks away. Our closest backup paramedic ambulance comes from over 15 miles away.

Fortunately, we have a backup system that recalls off duty members at a moments notice to staff our second ambulance.

We are thankful to all our Facebook followers, site visitors & folks who have signed up on our Town Alert system. Our job here is to inform you and insure your safety during an event. Like Supervisor Rob Stanley said yesterday, 'the more eyes, the more people who prep and are ready.'
As you can see by the chart below, just our page reached 12,631 people over the last few days.. with a jump of 193% in page views!

Supervisor Update 5pm 8/23/21
LAST UPDATE FOR THESE STORMS: Stream gauge never hit a high where we had to start evacuations and is going down quickly now. No more precipitation is anticipated and we're telling you,
WE ARE OUT OF THE WOODS.
No local closures or issues developed and we are all heading for some much needed rest.

All, Thank you for help coordinating and prepping at home. Also Thanks to you who have shared these UPDATES on a group or personal page; the more eyes, the more people who prep and are ready.
Also Special Thanks to Chiefs, Deputy Chiefs and Agency/Department Heads, and Ulster County Emergency Management who were remained available and collecting and deciphering data that they are privy.

Thanks.locally to Volunteer Fire Chiefs: Byron (Shandaken/Phoenicia/Mt.Tremper), Perez (Big Indian/Oliverea) and Smith (Highmount/Pine Hill). Also Cheif Storey & Deuty Chief Sharon (Police) and Chief Muellerleile and Deputy Coddington (Ambulance). And ALL THIER PERSONNEL who remained at the ready or assisted during the Event.

And for the Town Clerks Office who act as the Public Information Officer posting timely each UPDATE when needed.
