The 5th Marines and the last elements of the 7th Marines depart Peleliu for Pavuvu. Marine casualties for the operation total 1,336 dead or missing and 5,450 wounded. Losses among Navy personnel serving with marine units are 61 killed and 249 wounded.

The Secretary of the Navy directs the Commandant to send four officers and 74 enlisted Marines to New Orleans to replace a sickly force and defend against possible Spanish operations.

The 26th Marines arrives on Peleliu and relieves the Army's 111th Infantry of garrison duties. The Marines will oversea repatriation of Japanese troops located throughout the Palaus and the Western Carolines.

In commemoration of Marine service with the U.S. Army in the Mexican War the Navy Department authorizes the Corps to adopt the motto "Per Mare, Per Terram" ("By Sea, By Land").

Commodore Matthew C. Perry uses Marines and Sailors from his squadron to seize Frontera, Mexico, and then conduct a raid 70 miles up the Tabasco River to briefly capture the town of San Juan Bautista.

23 October 1983
Lebanon
A truck bomb destroys the building housing the headquarters of BLT 1/8. Marine casualties are 220 killed and 70 wounded, with 21 other American servicemen dead. This is the highest one day death toll in the Corps since WWII. A similar attack is made against the French position, killing 58. Elements of 2/6 begin deploying that day from Camp Lejeune to reinforce the BLT, while the Marines detachment of New Jersey comes ashore in the meantime.

German planes shoot down the bomber of Lieutenant Harvey G. Norman and his observer, Lieutenant Caleb W. Taylor. This is the first Marine aircraft lost to enemy action. Both men die in the crash.
