The Secretary of the Navy directs the Commandant to send four officers and 74 enlisted Marines to New Orleans to replace a sickly force and defend against possible Spanish operations.

Commodore Matthew C. Perry uses Marines and Sailors from his squadron to seize Frontera, Mexico, and then conduct a raid 70 miles up the Tabasco River to briefly capture the town of San Juan Bautista.

Lebanon
A truck bomb destroys the building housing the headquarters of BLT 1/8. Marine casualties are 220 killed and 70 wounded, with 21 other American servicemen dead. This is the highest one day death toll in the Corps since WWII. A similar attack is made against the French position, killing 58. Elements of 2/6 begin deploying that day from Camp Lejeune to reinforce the BLT, while the Marines detachment of New Jersey comes ashore in the meantime.

Belgium
German planes shoot down the bomber of Lieutenant Harvey G. Norman and his observer, Lieutenant Caleb W. Taylor. This is the first Marine aircraft lost to enemy action. Both men die in the crash.
