Today, the Capitol Region Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) hosted a MRC Mission Sets Workshop for MRC leaders and volunteers, local health department/district public health emergency preparedness coordinators and directors of health, hospital staff, long-term care facility staff, CT DPH, the CT Healthcare Coalition, and ASPR! All five emergency planning regions in CT were represented!

Allyson Schulz did a fantastic job facilitating the workshop which included guided discussions, presentations, and group exercises to dive into collaborative understanding and creation of mission sets that are applicable to CT MRC activities.

Our guest speakers Brooke Lawrence of the Rhode Island MRC and Nancy Burns of the Massachusetts MRC shared their road to successes and expert knowledge. NVHD’s Director of Health, Jess Kristy, also provided training and facilitation around Family Reunification and Family Assistance Centers.

Thank you to the Capitol Region MRC Lead, Katherine McCormack, for securing important funding from the CT Healthcare Coalition to make today’s workshop possible.

Does this type of collaboration and training interest you? Consider signing up for your local Medical Reserve Corps by going to CTResponds.ct.gov! We are actively recruiting volunteers 18 and older with both non-medical and medical backgrounds.

Naugatuck Valley Health District (NVHD) is pleased to once again partner with the Derby Police Department and Derby Youth Service Bureau to host a Medication Take Back event on Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 10:00am – 2:00pm. The drive-up event will take place outside Bradley School (155 David Humphrey Rd, Derby, CT 06418).

Aligned with the Drug Enforcement Agency’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and the Naugatuck Valley Community Health Improvement Plan initiative focused on substance use and drug overdose prevention, this event is being held in reflection of our joint commitment to safety and health by encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes.

Any person can come and safely dispose of unused or unwanted medications with no questions asked! This is open to the public – regardless of residence town.

1. Drive up and place your car in park
2. Drop off accepted medications (no questions asked!)
3. Drive away

It's that easy!

Accepted:
• Over-the-counter medications
• Prescription medications
• Medication samples
• Medications for household pets
• Medicated lotions or ointments
• V**e devices (battery must be removed)

Not Accepted:
• Needles or other “sharps”
• Hazardous waste
• Thermometers
• Personal care products (shampoo, etc.)

If you cannot make it to the event, you can drop off accepted items in a medication drop box, no questions asked, located in the lobbies of the following local police departments: Ansonia Police Department, Naugatuck Police Department, or Shelton CT Police Department. For additionally drop box locations, please visit https://portal.ct.gov/DCP/Drug-Control-Division/Drug-Control/Local-Drug-Collection-Boxes.

Homebound residents or individuals desiring to dispose of medication at home may call NVHD’s Naugatuck Valley Overdose Prevention & Education (NOPE) Program at 203-881-3255 x 103 and request a Deterra® disposal pouch to safely discard pills, patches, and liquid in your home garbage without harming the environment or worrying about a person or animal accessing the medication (while supplies last).

Questions regarding the Derby Medication Take Back Event should be directed to John Saccu, Director of the Derby Youth Services Bureau at [email protected].
