Working Structure Fire –
Redding Twp Vol Fire Dept.
At approximately 1:00 a.m., the Redding Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire on Sunny Side Drive, initially believed to be confined to a rear porch.
The Fire Chief arrived on scene at 1:08 a.m. and observed the homeowner exiting the garage carrying a child. All occupants were successfully evacuated, accounted for, and no injuries were reported.
A 360-degree size-up revealed heavy fire involvement at the rear of the residence. Crews encountered multiple hazards, including:
•Exploding propane tanks
•Ammunition firing off due to heat
•Downed live power lines
•A sparking electrical panel
Due to the size of the structure, advanced fire conditions, and the absence of an established water supply, additional resources were immediately requested.
The first engine arrived at 1:13 a.m. Given rapid fire spread, high heat conditions, confirmation of no occupancy, and safety concerns, crews implemented a defensive fire attack strategy. A large-scale water shuttle operation was established to supply water from remote locations.
Through the Jackson County mutual aid system, a substantial response was assembled, demonstrating strong inter-agency coordination.

Controlled Burn Scheduled in Rockford Area

The Redding Township Volunteer Fire Department will be conducting a planned controlled burn in the Rockford area on Sunday, March 29, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m. This operation is being carried out at the request of Indiana American Water.

The controlled burn will take place just west of the bridge in Rockford and is expected to continue for most of the day. During this time, residents and motorists will notice an increased presence of emergency vehicles and fire department personnel in the area.

Smoke conditions may vary throughout the day and could at times cross nearby roadways, potentially causing reduced visibility. Drivers are asked to use caution when traveling through the area.

This is a coordinated and permitted training and operational activity. The public is asked not to call 911 to report the smoke, as emergency services are aware of and actively managing the situation.

The Redding Township Volunteer Fire Department appreciates the community’s cooperation and understanding as crews conduct this important operation safely.
