Today, on September 11th, I think about more than the tragedy of that day. I think about what happened to us as a country afterward.

For a little while, we were different.

We were kinder. We checked on our neighbors. We helped strangers. We hugged a little tighter. We put our differences aside and stood together. It didn’t matter who you were, what you believed, or where you came from. We were one.

And somewhere along the way, we lost a little bit of that.

Today, we are so quick to attack, judge, and tear each other down. Words have become ugly. Actions have become mean. We have forgotten that there is a person on the other side of our disagreement.

We shouldn’t need a tragedy to bring out the best in us.

We shouldn’t need something heartbreaking to remind us that we are stronger when we stand together.

So today, I hope we remember not only what happened on September 11th, but how we treated one another afterward.

Be kind. Help someone. Check on your neighbor. Give someone grace. Disagree without being disagreeable.

We were once reminded that we are better together.

We don’t need another tragedy to prove it. We just need to choose it.

Today we would like to recognize Xamax Industries Inc. in Seymour, a longtime Seymour manufacturing company with a history dating back to 1949.
After moving from Stratford to Seymour in 1985, the company has continued to be part of Seymour’s manufacturing community. Today, Xamax is a global manufacturer of advanced materials, including specialty papers, films, nonwovens, laminates, coatings, electrical-insulation products, and advanced composites, serving industries such as aerospace, electrical, healthcare, transportation, and industrial manufacturing.
