Today in Fire Service History — May 28, 1977

The Beverly Hills Supper Club fire in Southgate, Kentucky claimed the lives of 165 people and injured more than 200 others, making it one of the deadliest nightclub fires in U.S. history. Overcrowding, lack of sprinklers, confusing layouts, and inadequate exits all contributed to the tragedy.

This fire changed the fire service forever, leading to stronger occupancy enforcement, improved life safety codes, and greater emphasis on inspections, pre-planning, and assembly occupancy safety.

As firefighters, officers, inspectors, and leaders, we remember those lost and continue to carry the lessons learned from that night into every inspection, every preplan, and every alarm we respond to.

History teaches us. Complacency kills.

If you can dream it, you can live it! Just need to try.

Everyone has ideas. Everyone has plans. The difference is ex*****on. Success isn’t built in big moments — it’s built by showing up day after day and putting in the work when motivation fades.

Dream it. Build it. Live it. 🚒🔥

Today the Seymour Fire Department extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and members of the Boston Fire Department on the tragic line-of-duty death of Firefighter Robert Kilduff.

The fire service is a brotherhood and sisterhood that stretches far beyond town and state lines. When one department suffers a loss, we all feel it. Behind every turnout coat and helmet is a person with a family, loved ones, and a life dedicated to serving others.

Please keep Firefighter Kilduff’s family and the members of the Boston Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Rest easy, brother. Your watch is complete. 🚒🖤

This weekend, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Memorial Day is more than a long weekend or the unofficial start of summer—it is a day of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance.

We remember those who answered a different kind of call for service, placing duty before self and giving everything to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. Their courage, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

As you spend time with family and friends this weekend, please take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this day and remember the heroes who never made it home.

From all of us at the Seymour Fire Department, we extend our deepest gratitude to the fallen and to the families who carry their legacy forward.

"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself."

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Two years ago, we had a crazy idea: Why not build our own training facility right here in Seymour?

So we formed a small exploratory committee to look at the costs, available property, and whether it was even realistic. What started as an idea and a dream is now beginning to become a reality.

With increasing training requirements and unfunded mandates, it continues to become more costly to keep our members trained and prepared — and ultimately that cost falls on taxpayer dollars. We also looked at recruitment and retention, and one of the most common concerns we heard was the time and commitment associated with training.

So we decided to jump in with full confidence.

Through the generosity of local businesses, organizations, and community members, we were able to secure donations of materials, services, and significant financial support to get this project moving.

A special thank you to our supporters:

• Citizens Golf Tournament – $20,000 donation
• Daddio’s – Two 20-foot containers
• Haynes – 32 tri-axles of processed material
• Burns Construction – Processed materials
• Griffin Brothers – Excavation work
• MF Rosa Company – Excavation work
• Quick Pick Crane – Crane services
• Aqua ProWash – Power washing services
• New owner of the Farrell’s building – Donation of materials and allowing us to salvage needed items
Cutting Edge Landscaping- Labor and equipment

While there is still a lot of work ahead before this facility is fully operational, this project will save taxpayer dollars while helping ensure our members receive quality training close to home and remain prepared to serve our community.

The facility is located on the Great Hill Hose property on Botsford Road.

I would also like to personally thank the committee members for their countless hours and tireless work. Dreams like this do not happen without dedicated people working behind the scenes. To all of our donors and supporters — this project would not be possible without you.

Stay tuned for continued updates as we move closer to the finish line.
