*What are the qualities that you would bring to the School Board?*

I am a lifetime Seymour resident. I completed Kindergarten through high school at SCSC. I graduated from high school in 2002. I currently have three children enrolled in SCSC where they have all gone since Kindergarten. I have a 7th grader at SMS and a 4th and 1st grader at Emerson Elementary. My mother, Chata Toppe, was a SCSC Kindergarten teacher for almost 30 years. I have grown up knowing and learning from several SCSC past and current educators. With those things being said, I bring a passion and vested interest in making our school corporation the best that it can be. I am totally dedicated to Seymour Community schools and our community as a whole. We need board members who have a vested interest in what is happening day to day in our schools and community. I feel that I can bring knowledge on what is happening in our schools from a parent perspective and can better help assess the needs of our student population, having my own children experiencing these situations presently. I will bring a voice for parents, students and staff. I believe that it is time for our school board to have someone with the qualities above to continue to move forward and not continue with the status quo. We need someone with a passion for Seymour Community Schools, and I believe I am that person.

*What do you feel are the three most pressing issues on the minds of the classroom teacher today?*

1.) Classroom overcrowding. We have class sizes of 28-30 kids. Especially in the elementary age groups this is way too many kids for one teacher to adequately meet the needs of every student in the classroom. We have to come up with solutions to this problem so that no child is denied any opportunities in their education.
2.) Pressures of so many outside requirements (UTL, PBIS, etc) taking away time from the teacher being able to do what they are there to do, which is to teach the kids.
3.) Feeling overwhelmed with the overcrowding and the outside requirements that are piled on to their plate and then feeling like no one is there to help or listen. People making the decisions and rules for them are not the people in the classrooms on a day to day basis.

* In these times of increased expectations for students and school employees and decreasing funding for education, what do you feel board members could do to continue to press for progress for teachers and students?*

A common frustration that I have heard from teachers over the years is that they are always being introduced to a new system or way of doing things. I would surmise that each time this happens, lots of money is spent to teach the program. Questions that I have about all of these workshops, professional development days when speakers come in to teach these courses, are we following up on implementation? Are we making sure that teachers and staff are equipped to carry out these programs? Are we funding these programs effectively or only doing something halfway and trying to get by and then the program or idea is never carried out to full effectiveness because we did not plan properly beforehand? When speaking on these programs I am referring to things such as, but not limited to, PBIS that was introduced in the past and more recently UDL. Are these programs effective? Are we taking time away from teachers when they could be working one on one with a student, responding to parent messages, adjusting or making plans for their classroom that day? I personally feel that we need to allow teachers to teach. Stop telling them how to do everything and making them do these programs that are supposedly so great. These programs, such as the current program with UDL, leave teachers feeling overwhelmed. We need to give teachers credit for knowing what they are doing instead of paying lots of money on programs wrapping ideas and suggestions in a different kind of package and making things that should be easy, harder and more time consuming. We are in turn taking away time that a teacher could be lesson planning for the students who are in their classroom that very day.

Running for school board is something that I have wanted to do for several years. I believe that it is very important to serve in your community. Serving our schools and being a part of the decision making processes that the school board entails has been a passion of mine for some time.

We must as a community have people who will step up and serve and have a vested interest in our community and schools. This is why I am running. I love our schools and want the very best for every student, as well as positive work environments for teachers and staff.

It is time for change. New voices and new ideas. Please share and spread the word! Vote Holly Coates for Seymour School Board!
