Jamie Opfer, the head football coach at Seward Public Schools recently had the opportunity to serve as the head coach of the Nebraska South Shrine Bowl team.

We loved getting to hear about his experience today! Wade Miller also served as an assistant coach and two Seward football players were selected to play- Jack Vyhnalek and Sam Sagehorn.

The club went on a field trip today! Thank you, Goehner Museum -Seward Co Historical Society for being such wonderful hosts! We enjoyed learning about the museum and the upcoming ballot measure!

The Kiwanis Club of Seward is deeply humbled and grateful that the Haas family has entrusted our Foundation to serve as the beneficiary of the Jarod Haas Trust.

Through Jarod’s generosity, the Jarod Haas Next Generation in Agriculture Scholarship will support Seward County students pursuing post-secondary education that prepares them for careers in agriculture right here in Nebraska. This endowment will create a lasting legacy, investing in the next generation of agricultural leaders and making a meaningful difference in the lives of Seward County students for years to come.

More information about scholarship eligibility and the application process will be shared with Seward County students by September 30, 2026.

We presented two more awards today from the District Convention today to members of the club.

Ken Meyer received the “Mark Holmer Layperson Service Award” this award is to recognize a Kiwanian who exemplifies the meaning of the first two objects of Kiwanis international in their daily life.

1. To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than the material values of life.
2. To encourage the daily living of the golden rule in all human relationships.

Across every part of his life, Ken is the same steady, humble, kind person. He doesn’t seek attention or recognition, but he makes a real difference in every group he’s part of by the way he shows up and treats people. Ken really leads with a humble spirit. You can tell he lives by the Golden Rule, and he consistently shows the love of Christ in how he treats people. Whether he’s working beside volunteers, mentoring others in Kiwanis, or just showing up to help wherever needed, he does it with kindness and grace.

The Club board was honored to nominate Ken and was thrilled that he was the winner!

We presented two more awards from the District Convention today to members of the club!

Lloyd Lipska received the “Everyday Hero Award” which was given to ONE person in the Nebraska-Iowa District. This award honors a person in our district (136 clubs!) who has exemplified, in an unusual and/or exceptional way, service above and beyond the call of duty.”

Lloyd reminds us that heroes aren't always the people in the spotlight. Sometimes they're the ones building, repairing, honoring, serving, and quietly making life better for everyone around them. From his service in the United States Army during the Vietnam War to his decades of volunteerism in Seward, Lloyd has lived a life defined by service to others. He is a role model, a mentor, and a friend whose impact can be seen throughout our community. For his lifetime of selfless service, Lloyd is truly deserving of the Everyday Hero Award.

The club board was honored to nominate Lloyd and thrilled he was the winner!

Jerry Meyer, executive director of the Nebraska National Guard Museum, is retiring on Friday after 12 years of leading the organization.

Congrats to SHS Key Club! They are so deserving of this award from our Kiwanis Nebraska-Iowa District! We were honored to nominate them for this.

This past year, the club reached 85 members - the largest membership in the five years that current faculty sponsors Ross Briggs and Ashlee Rickert have led the club. This remarkable growth is a testament to their leadership and to the students desire to become engage leaders who make a difference through service.
The partnership between the SHS Key Club and the Seward Kiwanis Club continues to grow, and both organizations look forward to joining forces on even more service projects in the future.

For their outstanding leadership, commitment to service and positive impact on the Seward community, the Seward High School Key Club is highly deserving of this award!
