Mexican Navy Cuauhtémoc in Seward for third visit
The Mexican Navy training tall ship ARM Cuauhtémoc made landfall in Seward this morning to a crowded reception at the Alaska Railroad Freight Dock.
The vessel made international headlines last year when it struck the Brooklyn Bridge in New York on May 17, 2025, while departing after a goodwill visit. Two crew members died and others were injured when the masts hit the underside of the bridge.
After repairs it resumed training cruises and arrived in Seward, Alaska, on August 29, 2026, for a four-day public visit.
This is the ship’s third visit to Seward. The Cuauhtémoc's first docked in seward during a 2005 North Pacific Training Cruise.
A second visit occurred during the Sail Latin America / América 2014 instructional cruise. It arrived around Mexican Independence Day (September 15) and offered public tours.
Local reporting by Wolfgang Kurtz, Editor of the Seward Phoenix Log at the time, called it the second visit in a decade.
