Our next installment of reasons to join the Seward Fire Department.... family.

Most of us joined up for adventure, a desire to help the community, or are just excited by big fancy trucks.

But the reason we stay is the community we find here at the fire department. It is hard to put into words just how much it means to each and every one of us to be part of this family. You become grafted into this family once you join up.

It is a family that is bonded through adversity. You quickly realize how much you can (and have to) depend on each other. Getting up at all hours of the night together, enduring endless hours of training together, and dealing with some of the hardest calls you can imagine together forges bonds that you just have to experience to believe.

When we talk about each other as family that is not just words. There is a fraternal love in the fire department that just lets you know you are home when you walk through the door.

We want to share this with you! Come join us and be a part of our family. I promise you this, you will not regret it. The cool nature of the job is what brings people in. The fire family is what makes people stay.

🚒 A Huge Thank You to Metco! 🌊

The Seward Fire Department is incredibly grateful to Metco for their generous donation of an Oceanid RAPID DEPLOYMENT CRAFT (RDC)!

This equipment will greatly enhance our ability to respond to water emergencies and help keep our community and visitors safe. Your generosity is an investment in our responders and the people we serve.

Last week we told you one of our favorite things about volunteering is the training...

This week's reason you should join Seward Fire is all about the types of calls we respond to!!!

Seward Fire Department prides itself on being there for the community. Whether its a house fire, medical call, or you are lost on Mt. Marathon, we will be there to help.

As a volunteer you may be called upon to fight a fire one day, help a sick child the next, and then get a cat out of a tree after that.

No matter the call, we strive to help where we can.

There is something special about being the person that the community can depend on. If you are looking for that sort of purpose, Seward Fire Department is the place for you!

We could not do what we do for our community without our volunteers. Come join our family and see what it is all about!

Once again, you do not need to have experience or training, we will fill that in. All we ask is that you show up willing to learn and have a heart for your community.

We are starting a new series highlighting some of the reasons why we volunteer (and why you should too)!

This week's reason.... TRAINING!!!! Seward Fire Department works hard to put an emphasis on providing the best training we can for our volunteers.

You can expect high quality training in subjects such as fire suppression (duh), emergency medical services from basic to advanced, extrication (cutting up cars), HAZMAT, swiftwater rescue, Marine firefighting and rescue (interested in driving the Fire Boat?) wildland firefighting, etc.

Our community expects us to be able to respond to whatever emergency there may be, so we try to prepare for everything. It helps that it is also FUN!!! Oh and did we mention free? We work hard with our partner agencies to provide realistic and exciting training at no cost to our volunteers.

We are saving the best for last.... There is no prerequisite knowledge needed!!! All we ask is that you show up willing to learn and we will give you everything you need.

If you are interested but for some reason don't want to go into a burning building (crazy thought I know), that is ok. We have a space for everyone. We have volunteers who are only here for EMS, we have volunteers who want to focus on rope rescue, we have volunteers who are only here to drive trucks and drink coffee (looking at you Jeremy). We will find out what you are interested in and get you up and running.

Our training nights are Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM at 316 4th Ave. Feel free to stop by and check us out!

Today Seward Fire took part in a joint operation with the Air National Guard pararescuemen to reach and help an injured patient who was stuck in Day Harbor due to weather and challenging seas with 10’ swells and battering winds.

Due to the severity of the weather, utilizing a helicopter was not possible so a response began using the Fire Rescue Boat John Foster.

We have been diligently working towards an integrated Advanced Life Support response and we were able to put those skills and equipment to work as we tried to look for a weather window to extract the patient. We were able to evaluate, stabilize the patient, give pain control measures, and extract the patient safely and efficiently back through the rough seas.

Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us with training and support. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without you.

And a special shoutout to Engineer Jason Harrington for proving rough seas don’t mean anything with him at the helm!

🚧 Building Safety Month Wrap-Up 🚧

As Building Safety Month comes to a close, we want to thank our community for helping make safety a priority here in Seward. 💙

Throughout the month, we focused on simple but important steps that protect lives — from testing smoke alarms to planning escape routes and understanding how building safety impacts all of us every day.

🏠 Safe buildings save lives. Whether at home, work, or school, the choices we make today help prevent emergencies tomorrow.

Here are a few reminders to carry forward year-round:
✔️ Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly
✔️ Keep exits clear and accessible
✔️ Review and practice your emergency plans
✔️ Report hazards when you see them
