Seward Energy Futures Website Updated

The City of Seward Electric Department has updated the Seward Energy Futures webpage with new information and resources to help keep the community informed as we continue evaluating options for the future of our electric utility.

Recent additions include:

-Summaries and photos from all four Seward Energy Futures Town Halls

-The Community Focus Group Report

-The White Paper on Utility Governance Options

-The presentation from the May 28, 2026, Town Hall

-A video recording of the May 28 Town Hall

These resources are available to help community members review the information presented throughout this open and transparent process.

Looking ahead, residents can expect an invitation in June to participate in the next Seward Energy Futures Community Survey. We will also be offering opportunities for community members to participate in smaller-group economic evaluation sessions for those interested in taking a closer look at the financial models and assumptions behind the various utility options being considered.

Visit the Seward Energy Futures webpage here:

We encourage everyone to stay engaged and help shape the future direction of Seward's electric utility.

Some customers have been asking about the work taking place at Mile 9. Recently, we were made aware of a burned crossarm that ignited one of the transmission poles in the area.

Our Operator Mechanics are currently working to reopen the access trail so the Line Crew can safely reach the site and replace the damaged pole and crossarm. At this time, the transmission line remains in service, and we have developed a repair plan focused on minimizing generator runtime.

Due to the challenging terrain and remote location, this is a complex repair project, but crews are making steady progress. We will continue to provide updates as work moves forward.

Eighteen Pagoda Dogwood trees are available for adoption. If a tree under the power line requires clearance and you desire additional privacy, eighteen trees remain at Fort Raymond. When accessing Sealion from the highway, take the first left onto Diamond, followed by a right turn onto the dirt road leading to the power plant. The trees will be visible in the grass on the right side of the road. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

🚧 Jeep Trail Update 🚧

The City of Seward Electric Department is gearing up to finish the final sections of the Jeep Trail that we were unable to complete last fall before the ground froze. We are excited to get back out there and continue improving the trail system for the community.

On Monday evening, we also held a community input session at the Library and received a lot of great feedback from trail users. With support from Parks and Recreation, we will be moving forward with adding benches at several key locations along the trail, including the switchback corners, the waterfall area, and the reservoir overlook.

We also received feedback regarding the crossover trail signs and will be lowering them to eye level to improve visibility and navigation throughout the trail system.

If you have any additional feedback or ideas, we would love to hear from you as we continue improving the area for everyone to enjoy.

During construction, the Jeep Trail will be closed during working hours for public safety, but we plan to reopen the trail each evening after work is completed so the community can continue to enjoy the area and watch the progress. All parallel trails will remain open during construction.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and support as we complete the final phase of work and continue building a trail system that the community can be proud of.

We thought the community would enjoy a look at the freshly painted Mt. Marathon Hydro Plant.

Our City of Seward Operator Mechanics completed an incredibly detailed paint job—this is craftsmanship you don’t see every day, and it shows the pride they take in their work.

Next up, we’re working to lock in dates for the track crawler so we can complete the final touch-ups on the Jeep trail. As soon as those dates are confirmed, we’ll share a public notice with the schedule.

We appreciate everyone’s continued support as we bring this project closer to full operation.
