South Cumberland Plateau Americorps VISTA Project

South Cumberland Plateau Americorps VISTA Project A partnership of South Cumberland Community Fund & University of the South Office of Civic Engagement Make a difference!

The South Cumberland Community Fund and The University of the South (Sewanee) have partnered to offer a unique community-university South Cumberland Plateau AmeriCorps VISTA Project (SCPVP). This project is a full-time, one-year service program in which VISTA volunteers will work with community partners throughout the Plateau. Each position offers the unique opportunity to work in a rural, histori

cally, and economically depressed region of Tennessee. Projects focus on community organizing, grant writing, volunteer recruitment, collaborating with K-12 schools initiatives to ensure and enhance sustainable programs. SCPVP provides training to enhance each VISTA member’s personal and professional development. This AmeriCorps VISTA program is team-focused, providing group programming, support, and social opportunities for each AmeriCorps VISTA. Help us improve our South Cumberland Plateau communities.

Getting Things Done on the South Cumberland Plateau

Here's a closer look at just a few of our many VISTA projects!

Emily Heid serves as the Specialty Crop Economic Development Coordinator with The University Farm at The University of the South. The Specialty Crop Economic Development Coordinator has been exploring possible high-value crop opportunities for farmers on the South Cumberland Plateau. In September of 2018, the University of the South Farm received Specialty Crop Block Grant funding through the USDA and TDA to begin research and educational programming focused on North American elderberry. The Specialty Crop Economic Development Coordinator plans to provide resources and support to farmers who may want to expand into commercial elderberry production on the Plateau and surrounding areas.

BetterFi’s Financial Inclusion Coordinator, Sam Shaw, is developing a holistic financial coaching program operated by volunteers along with complementary financial and soft skill programming to assist low-income residents in the tri-county area of Franklin, Grundy and Marion. To learn more about Sam’s project, contact [email protected].

Julianna McBee serves as the Attendance and Academic Success Coordinator for Grundy County Board of Education. Julianna is working to improve attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism in all schools in Grundy County. To learn more about Julianna’s project, contact [email protected].
