On Saturday, September 5, 2026, at approximately 9:40 p.m., the Seville-Guilford Fire Department was dispatched to a reported residential structure fire in the 8700 block of River Styx Road in Guilford Township.

The first Seville-Guilford Fire Department officer arrived on scene at approximately 9:46 p.m. and reported a single-story residence with smoke showing from the front door. All occupants of the residence had safely evacuated prior to the arrival of fire department personnel.

Additional Seville-Guilford personnel arrived shortly thereafter, and the first fire attack crew entered the residence. Water was placed on the fire within minutes, and the incident was declared under control at approximately 10:04 p.m. Crews remained on scene conducting extinguishment, salvage, and overhaul operations.

Due to the nature of the incident, mutual-aid resources were requested from surrounding departments. Seville-Guilford Fire Department would like to thank Lafayette Township Fire Department, Rittman Fire Department, Sharon Township Fire Department, Westfield Fire & Rescue, Wadsworth Fire & EMS, and Medina Life Support Team, for their assistance and response.

The American Red Cross was also requested to assist two families and a dog affected by the fire. Electrical service to the residence was disconnected, and arrangements were made to secure the structure following fire department operations.

There were no reported injuries to occupants or firefighters documented in the initial incident information.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Seville-Guilford Fire Department would like to recognize the coordinated efforts of our personnel, neighboring fire departments, law enforcement, dispatchers, utility personnel, and other agencies involved in bringing this incident under control.

GUILFORD TOWNSHIP ASSISTANT ROAD SUPERVISOR

Applications are being accepted by the Guilford Township Trustees for the part-time position of Assistant Road Supervisor. A valid driver's license and Class B CDL license will be required; be able to pass drug screening and do physical work and snow plowing. With 641 calls through August, Seville-Guilford Fire is projected to finish 2026 with approximately 962 calls, a 13.3% increase over last year’s 849 calls. By comparison, national fire-service call volume has grown at an average rate of roughly 3% annually since 2008. Our projected increase is more than four times that pace, demonstrating the growing demand placed on our personnel and resources.

Congratulations to Hinckley Fire & Rescue on an outstanding accomplishment, every member of their department is now a certified Paramedic, a first in their department’s history.

This is a tremendous achievement and, more importantly, a significant benefit to the residents they serve. Having highly trained Paramedics throughout the department strengthens the level of care available when their community needs it most.

At Seville-Guilford Fire Department, we are working toward that same goal. We have made significant progress in raising our training and certification standards, and our long-term objective is to continue developing our EMTs and providing opportunities for them to obtain their Paramedic certification.

With the majority of the calls we respond to being EMS-related, investing in advanced medical education is an investment directly back into our community.

Congratulations to Chief Payne and the entire Hinckley Fire & Rescue team. This is something your department and community should be extremely proud of.

~A HISTORIC MILESTONE FOR OUR DEPARTMENT~

Congratulations to Firefighter Jacob Jariga on successfully passing his State Firefighter II certification exam!

With Jacob’s achievement, every responding member of the Seville-Guilford Fire Department is now certified as a State of Ohio Firefighter II, the highest level of basic firefighter certification in Ohio.

This milestone directly strengthens our ability to respond safely and effectively. It means every member arriving on an emergency scene has completed the advanced training necessary to perform interior structural firefighting, conduct search and rescue operations, operate safely at fire scenes, and work effectively as part of a coordinated emergency response team.

Having every responding member certified at this level improves firefighter safety, strengthens teamwork, and provides greater consistency on every shift and at every emergency. It also ensures our residents receive capable, professional service regardless of which members are on duty when the call comes in.

Our commitment to professional development does not stop here. We currently have nine responding members who are certified as EMT-Basics:

* One has completed Paramedic School and will soon take the state certification exam.
* One will complete Paramedic School within the next two months and is expected to become certified by the end of the year.
* Three additional members are preparing to begin Paramedic School by the end of this year or early next year.

My goal as Fire Chief is to have every member on our roster trained to the highest level possible by the end of 2027. Reaching that goal will help ensure every shift is consistently staffed with highly trained firefighters and emergency medical professionals.

The residents of the Village of Seville and Guilford Township deserve the very best. As Fire Chief, I will continue doing my part to ensure every member of this department possesses the essential skills, knowledge, and advanced training needed to serve our communities safely, professionally, and effectively.

Marshall is more than just our firehouse dog, he’s part of the crew, a friend to everyone who walks through our doors, and definitely one of the most popular members of the department!

This incident on I-71 is another reminder that danger can appear anywhere, at any time. I want to recognize the outstanding work of all the agencies involved, including the Ohio State Highway Patrol, U.S. Marshals, Jackson Police Department, and everyone who played a role in quickly locating and taking the suspect into custody.

I am especially proud of the men and women of the Seville-Guilford Fire & EMS Department who responded to the initial call to care for the victims. When the tones drop, our crews don’t know exactly what they’re walking into. They don’t know if the scene is secure, how many patients there are, or what dangers may still exist. What they do know is that someone needs help.

These types of incidents happen every day across our country. Our firefighters and paramedics answer those calls without hesitation, placing the needs of complete strangers ahead of their own comfort and, at times, their own safety. They don’t ask who the patient is, what happened, or what choices led to the situation. They simply do what they have been trained to do, provide professional, compassionate care to anyone in need.

I couldn’t be more proud of our personnel and the professionalism they demonstrate every single day. Their commitment to serving our community, regardless of the circumstances, is what defines the fire service.

To our crews: thank you for your courage, your dedication, and your willingness to answer the call.

Flock cameras helped catch a suspect wanted for shooting two people in a road rage incident Tuesday, according to the U.S. Marshals.
