⚠️ Planning to dig? Know the law and stay safe!
Under Tennessee law, “excavation” includes any digging or moving of earth—by hand, machine, or even explosives. Buried utilities may be much closer to the surface than you think.
Always call 811 at least 3 working days before starting your project to avoid fines, costly repairs, or serious injury.

What is the definition of "excavation" or "digging" under the law?

“Excavation” under law covers a long list of activities, including the “…movement, placement, or removal of earth, rock, or other materials in or on the ground by use of mechanized equipment, discharge of explosives, or by hand digging…”

Don’t assume buried are deep. Ground conditions like rock, hard soil, slopes, and existing underground congestion can keep lines much closer to the surface, even inches below ground.

Plan ahead and contact 811 three working days before your project. Don’t risk fines, cost of utility repairs or worse- potential injuries and death from striking an underground line. Know what’s below!
